ANGKOR WAT BOOK

The book will be divided into six broad chapters, with careful use of subheadings to
divide them into exciting and readable chunks.

R EDISCOVERY
begins with the exciting story of how Henri Mouhot discovered Angkor
Wat, despite it being known about by locals for many centuries, legends that
surround the temple, capturing the excitement that this site produced at
that time (and still does today)

2.

A GE OF THE A NGKORIAN
a chapter that looks at the foundation of the city and the Khmer empire
under Jayavarman II, the layout of Angkor Wat and a description of the
structures and what went on there, and provides a general introduction to
the Khmer and other important sites and events

3.

T EMPLE C ITY
a chapter that looks at the various religious influences on Angkor Wat,
identifying the plurality of religions practiced there over time, the material
expression of these religions, and the history of their movement in the wider
region

4.

K HMER A ESTHETICS
a chapter that primarily looking at the artistic and architectural style of
Angkor Wat, linking the political and religious history mentioned in the
previous chapters with the material remains, but also describes the
magnificence of the Angkorian Golden Age and relations with Khmers
neighbouring powers

5.

R ECLAIMED BY THE J UNGLE


Looks at the fall of Angkor Wat and the decline of the Khmer, but looks too at
the story of the site in later periods until its rediscovery described in the
first chapter

6.

L EGACY
synthesis of what makes this such a rich reservoir of cultural heritage, looks
at its continued cultural and religious importance today, looks at
archaeological (and restorative) work that is going on today, and its
reception and use in wider world culture
