Lesson Plan

Unit/Topic: Mathematics
Date:
Time: 45 minutes
Year Level: Year 9 (high level)
Key Learning Area:
Lesson Intention: I will be able to summarise large amount of data by using Box
Plot.
Success Criteria:
I can rearrange data in order from the lowest to the highest.
I can find the median (Q2) of the entire set.
I can find the two medians (Q1, Q3) of the two halves.
I can find the lowest and the highest of the data.
I can present them (Q1, Q2, Q3, the minimum, the maximum) in the Box
Plot.
Outcomes:
ACMSP: Compare data displays using mean, median and range to describe and
interpret numerical data sets in terms of location (centre) and spread.

LESSON OUTCOMES:
Students have already known how to calculate median or quartiles (Q1, Q2, Q3), range,
mean and identify mode of data. In year 8, students were taught how to evaluate and
investigate techniques to collect data, explore the variation of means and proportions of
random samples and investigate the effect of individual data values.
Lesson outcomes for year 8:

ACMSP284: Investigate techniques for collecting data, including census, sampling

and observation.

ACMSP293: Explore the variation of means and proportions of random samples

drawn from the same population

ACMSP207: Investigate the effect of individual data values, including outliers, on the
mean and median.

This class is the top level class. Most student in this class work best both in group and
individually. They have ability to understand the task given, stick on the tasks and do their
task individually. Also, they can help each other. However, for some who have difficulty in
concentrating or dealing with abstract concepts, I am going to let them work with other
good students so that the can support each other.

LESSON STRUCTURE:
Time
10 mins

Introduction (Set):

Teaching
Approaches

Teachers activities
- divide students into groups
of 5 or 6.

Students activities
- do as teachers
requirement.

(see the attached

group list)

- write 7 questions on the

board relating to their old
knowledge.
How can we find the
mean of data?
What is median?
How can we find
median?
How can we find the
range of data?
What are upper quartile
and lower quartile?
How can we find them?
What does IQR stand
for? How can we find it?

- work out the answers

individually.

Question asking

- show teachers expectations

on power point and explain
that if the follow the
expectations and answer
questions correctly, they will
be given a point so that they
can get a reward after lesson.

Individual work

- listen to teacher and do as

required.
Playing games

- ask the students randomly

to give answer written on the
board.

S282486

- revise the old knowledge

(Q1, Q2, Q3, lowest value,
highest value) by giving an
exercise on power point.

- read the exercise and

discuss in group. Noise
volume will be counted for
the reward. Making too
much noise will be taken
points.

- ask the students to give

answer as a group by raising
their hands.

- answer the questions by

raising their hands.
Otherwise, their answers
are not valid to take points
for the reward.

Main Content:

Teaching
Approaches

Teachers activities
- lead to the lesson Box and
Whisker Plot.

Students activities
- note down the title of the
lesson into notebook.
Individual work

- ask all the students if any of

them know Box and Whisker
Plot.
- show the definition of the
Box and Whisker Plot on the
board. It is the summary of
the five values (lowest value,
highest value, Q1, Q2, Q3).
15 mins

- answer if possible.

- copy down the definition.

Explanation

- explain why we have to

summarize the large amount
of data by Box Plot.

- copy down the reason.

- guide students how to

summarize the data by using
Box Plot.

- note down the steps how

to summarize data by using
Box Plot.
Group work

- give each group an answer

sheet printed (4 answer
sheets)

10 mins

- show 8 questions on the

board and let them answer in
group into the answer sheet
given, 20 seconds for each
question. The questions
included pictures will be
shown from
https://www.brainingcamp.co
m/content/box-and-whiskerplots/questions.php

- look at the questions and

answer them into the
answer sheet.

(see attached
questions)

- collect the answer sheets

and give feedback.
- give reward for the group
that has the most point.
- hand the answer sheets
again and ask for answers
individually.

S282486

- answer individually.

Hoang Diem Phuong Tran

Individual work

EST204

Lesson Plan
- give them exercise to
practice Box Plot at class on
power point.

- do exercise individually.

- go around, make sure

everybody does the exercise
individually and help if
necessary.
- collect their exercise to
check their understanding.

Time

5 mins

- ask them to do extra

exercise 1, 2, 3 on
Mathematics for Year 9, page
339, 340 after finish the
exercise on the board.
Conclusion:

- do extra exercise into

notebook.

Teachers activities
Students activities
- remind students how to
present data by using Box
- listen to the teacher, note
Plot.
- summarize what was learnt down anything necessary.
by going through the success
criteria with students on the
power point.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS/MATERIALS/ BEHAVIOUR M ANAGEMENT

Teachers expectation:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Keep quiet in class

Raise your hand if you want to ask or answer
Sit in your comfortable chair
Stay focused
Use NO cell phones or tablets unless necessary

If they follow the expectations, they will be given a point so that at the end of the lesson,
they can receive a reward. If they do not follow expectations, they, as a group, will be
taken points.
In case they forget unintendedly to follow the expectations, teacher will remind them nonverbally (body language) or verbally.
There are 10 questions on the website but teacher should use 8 first questions because
the last 2 questions do not support to the lesson.

ASSESSMENT
- After going through 10 questions as a whole class, teacher will collect all the answer
sheets from groups and give feedback if they have done well and how many correct
answers they have. Then teacher gives the answer sheets to them again and check the
answers as a whole class.
- Students are required to work the exercise given on power point in group first. Teacher
helps the students who have difficulty in doing tasks independently. Then teacher collects
their notebook to check their understanding and return them next class. If there is enough
time, they will do exercise in their text books (Mathematics for Year 9, page 339, 340)
individually. Teacher helps individually, mainly focus on the students having difficulty in
doing tasks independently.
