Assignment 5.

Mechanical Design Homework Problem

An NPS 12 pipeline has a design pressure of 12,000kPa and is constructed from Grade 359 steel.
The design factor may be taken as 0.8, the location factor 0.625, while the joint factor J and
temperature derating factor T are both equal to 1.0. The pipe is buried and may be taken as fully
restrained. The temperature at the time of installation was -20oC while the design operating
temperature is 10oC. Youngs modulus may be taken as 207* 103MPa, Poissons ratio is 0.3 and the
coefficient of linear expansion of steel 1.2 * 10-5/ C. Determine (i) the required wall thickness, (ii)
the hoop and longitudinal stresses in the pipe, and (iii) the combined stress.
(b) Lowering in a pipe line into a trench could cause large longitudinal bending stresses. Give TWO
reasons why large stresses might be concern. What can be done to reduce such stresses?
