Description of artifact and how the artifact meets the standard:
At the beginning of the school year it is so important for a teacher to create an environment of mutual respect, rapport,
and fairness with his or her students. Teachers need to earn, not demand, the respect of his or her students because it will
create a safe and welcoming environment for all students. Students will also be more motivated and encouraged to
follow directions, put forth hard work, and take pride in their learning.
During the first two days of school I talk with my students about our schools rules and Bondurants BEST. From there,
we create our classroom rules. We brainstorm a whole list of positive items, and as a class we narrow it down to four or
five rules for our classroom. Students also sign their name under the rules to signify their promise to following the rules.

Reflection on artifact (what went right, what went wrong, how to make better)
I really enjoy creating classroom rules together as a whole class. The students feel ownership over the rules because
they play an important role in brainstorming and creating the rules. During our discussion I make sure to lead the
students to certain rules we should have for our classroom by asking questions about situations that may occur in class.
We then work together as a class to combine different items into one rule, and rewrite a rule to cover multiple items. It is
a very fun process because they students take pride in their hard work of creating these rules, so it immediately creates a
safe, open, and fair environment for all learners. Students also enjoy writing their name because it seems official to
them. By signing their name, the students automatically feel professional and hold accountable to following the rules.
We have our classroom rules on display in our classroom above the sink. Students use this area of the classroom
multiple times a day to get a drink, wash hands, or get a tissue, so its a great spot for students to see our rules to be
reminded of them.
