Summary:
Numerous scientific studies have pointed out the significant relation between a
balanced diet and a good health. As balanced diet is considered the Mediterranean diet.
The Mediterranean diet is based on the daily consumption of fruits and vegetables, as well
as food, from all relative groups, and the red wine. On the other hand, the consumption of
red meat and candies is limited to the minimum.
Wrong nutritive habits may result in a pathological state of health. The cirrhosis of liver
constitutes a pathological state of health and the wrong nutritive habits are, to a great
extend, responsible for it.
The cirrhosis of liver is the widespread disruption of the normal liver structure by
fibrosis and the formation of regenerative nodules. Therefore, the cirrhosis of liver is,
morphologically, parted in the following types: a. the mironodules type, b. the
meganodules type, and c. the mixed nodules type.
The clinical picture of each patient varies. Some of the patients display benign
symptoms, such as anorexia, debility and low fever, while a 30%- 40% of them are
asymptomatic, which means that their diagnosis will be based on pathology (i.e. any
deviation from a healthy or normal condition).
The final diagnosis will be made after a thorough laboratory check that includes a
biochemical, immunological and haematological check, a biopsy and endoscopy of the
liver, as well as an ultrasonography and axial tomography of the abdomen. Unfortunately,
the cirrhosis of liver is not reversible. It may be stable or gradually deteriorate.
The hepatic encephalopathy precedes the hepatic insufficiency. The latter denotes the
final stage of the cirrhosis of liver. Consequently, the cirrhosis of liver is a very important
disease and our priority is to stabilise it.
One of the ways of delay of event of complicationsis the complete and balanced diet.
In case of appearance of complications the nutritional education is individualised. The
modern Greek society has been removed by the model of Mediterranean diet, consequently
the increase of diseases. Is judged, therefore, essential, the adoption ofMediterranean
nutritional model.

The last years a big number of studies has indicated the role of nutrition in health. The
balanced diet, adapted to each medical case separately, has an important role in the
prevention, the treatment and the healing of many deceases.
The liver cirrhosis, which is the result of many different deceases of the liver, is based
to a degree to the bad nutritive habits.
The hepatic encephalopathy is the most serious complication of cirrhosis, which,
sooner or later, leads to hepatic insufficiency.
Consequently, the supplementary role of nutrition to cirrhotic patients is of great
importance. The proper diet limits the complications and increases the possibilities of
curing the illness.
