I gave my participants a choice of these magazine covers, they had to choose their favourite
and describe why:

The magazine that received the most interest from my participants was image 4
(Euphoria/Jesse Rutherford), often chosen due to the models unique pose, pointed out as
possibly representing an 18-24 age range with sophistication, lack of colour and bold font
type. This was interesting as even my older participants agreed that Euphoria stood out the
most, despite Jesses somewhat offensive pose. The second magazine to rank highest was
image 2 (Front/Josh Franceschi), what stood out to me about these responses is that the
magazine covers without colour where chosen as most likely to attract these customers,
unlike my two coloured examples (At Large and Kerrang!).
Also image 2 was described as interesting due to its simplicity and optical illusion. The
sketch somewhat breaks magazine cover conventions and that clearly has an effect on our
audience.

After asking my participants for a price range I concluded that around the 2 mark would be
suitable for a specific music genre themed magazine for my target audience (age ranged 1824).
When asking for my target audiences music taste with their 5 favourite musicians/bands, I
quickly realised that the majority of 18-24 year olds who took my survey where interested in
alternative rock, indie, pop punk, skate genre of music. Overall these genres are generally
quite alternative, concluding the reasoning for Image 4 (Euphoria/Jesse Rutherford) being
the most popular magazine cover, as it represents a unique style and conveys an outside-ofthe-box strategy to magazine covers. Although the pose has the use of expletives, not one of
my participants complained or mentioned that it would put them off of that particular
magazine if they were to see it in a shop.
I also asked what other hobbies/things my participants enjoyed doing to create an idea of
what kind of information I could include into my music magazine. Male participants often
answered football, whilst females often answered reading or writing. This could be a biased
result, yet most of the people who answered said they enjoyed socialising with friends
and/or drinking. This could be incorporated into my music magazine with best social scenes
to go to in the local area, with specified music genres possibly.
