So,howdidthisallbegin?Forhundredsofyearspriortotherevolution,FrenchpeoplelikemostEuropeans
weredividedintothreesocialestates:clergy,nobility,andthelowestestate,thecommoners,whichexistedto
servetheotherestates.AboveallwasGod'sgifttomankind,theking.
ButthishierarchywasbeingquestionedbytheEnlightenment,athemovementofintellectualswhopromoted
theuseofthereasonandscience.Revolutionaryideasbegantospreadtothepublic.
Inthe1780swhenaneconomicallybrokensplitmonarchytriedtoincreasetaxesonthecommoners,
resentmentreachedanewlevelandriotsbegan.OnthefourteenthofJuly1789,revolutionistsstormedthe
Bastillefortress,asymboloftheroyalpower.Thisdateismarkedasthebeginningoftheendoftheold
monarchyandbecameFrancesIndependenceDay,eventhoughthekingwasbeheadedin1793.
Shortlyafter,theFrenchadoptedauniversaldeclarationwhichstated,thatMenarebornandremainfreeand
equalinrights.Thiswasaradicalchangeeventhoughitleftmanypeopleout.ButtheFrenchRevolutionwas
farfromasmoothride.Actually,itwasabloodbathwhichledtoexternalandinternalwars.Thenewly
introducedguillotineworkedovertimebeheadingtensofthousandsofFrenchduringtheperiodknownThe
Terror.
In1799,therevolutionendedwhenamilitarycommanderbythenameofNapoleonBonaparteseizedcontrolof
theFrenchlegislature,eventuallydeclaringhimselfemperor.
