Learning intentions and success criteria

Learning intentions
summarise and interpret data
ability to make logical conclusions on the
statistics
discuss alternative solutions to improve
health statistics in Asia
success criteria
students are able to interpret and
summarise data from various graphical
displays of data (eg bar graphs,
histograms and tabulated data etc )
students are able to make conclusions
based on statistics on health standard of
Asia
students are able to state solutions to
improve health statistics in Asia
Organisation / Student Groups

Day & Date: lesson 1

Time: excursion
9 am- 3pm

AusVels

Evaluate statistical reports in the media and

other places by linking claims to displays,
statistics and representative data (ACMSP253)

Special Considerations/help for struggling

students

Lesson Plan Template

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Very diverse group of students each with

varying ability.
If a student is struggling try relate the work to
increase their interest and motivation
Show students I am approachable if they
require extra help
For struggling students I will shift my focus
from outcome focused to process focused.

Key Vocabulary

Statistics
Mortality
Morbidity
Life expectancy
Data representation and interpretation
Compare
Population

Focus Questions

Prompting questions
how are statistics found what methods are
used to find the information and display
the information?
What factors would affect health rates in
different countries?
What sources can we use to find
information on health related topics for
Asia?
What mathematical reporting tools can be
used to analyse and present information
gathered?

TIME ALLCOATION FOR EACH ACTIVITY/INSTRUCTION etc.

Students will all arrive to school

and will enter the school bus
and drive to the Asia education
foundation at the University of
Melbourne.
Prompting question assess prior
knowledge: how are statistics
found what methods are used to
find the information and display
the information?
What factors would affect health
rates in different countries?
What sources can we use to find
information on health related
topics for Asia?
What mathematical reporting
tools can be used to analyse
and present information
gathered?
Engage: above prompting
questions used while at AEF.
Explore: give students various
representations of data in
various forms relating to health.
Some data and information will
be represented badly with data
ambiguity to make data
information hard to figure out,
poor use of visual data
representation and data that
has no relevance to topic. I will
also show students good
representations of data that is
well presented and has all the
necessary information.
Explain: students think and
discuss with each other why
particular data representation is
good. This will also allow
students to understand and

Elaborate: at the AEF they have

activities which they have planned
for to assist students to evaluate
statistical reports to compare
population numbers and life
expectancy.
Elaborate: activity 1: world
population clocks. In this activity,
students will investigate a number
of internet websites that display
population clocks which give 'real
time' estimates of the world's
population and use these for
mathematical calculations
(Asiaeducation.edu.au). formative
assessment
Elaborate: Activity 2: Countryspecific population clocks. In this
activity, you will calculate and
substantiate the claim that the rate
of Australia's population is
increasing by one every 97 seconds
(Asiaeducation.edu.au). formative
assessment
Elaborate: Activity 3: Life
expectancy. In this activity students
will compare the life expectancy of
inhabitants of different countries
and observe the differences
between male and female life
expectancies and those of different
ethnic groups in most countries and
cultures. You may choose to
construct the table as a
spreadsheet, using appropriate
software to assist with different
sorting and graphing techniques.
formative assessment

Elaborate: Activity 4: Graphing data. In

this activity you will use data completed
from Activity 3 to create graphs and
analyse information. You will choose or be
allocated one Asian country to research.
(Asiaeducation.edu.au). formative
assessment.
Evaluate: Students will explain the data
and information they have found after
completing the 4 activities. They will also
explain and critique each others data and
information they have collected and
discuss its relevance. Students will explain
and critique the method of representing
their data they have selected and discuss
why the information presented is effective
or how the representation can be
improved.
All students and staff get on the bus and
head back to school.
