Sophomore D 0910 Algebra

I. Exponential Equations
1. an equation with an exponent
2. example: 5^(2) = 25
3. Rule: b^(m) = b^(n)
4. Solving for variables in exponential equations
1. Example #1: 3^(X) = 27
1. 3^(X) = 3^(3) - change 27 to 3^(3)
2. X = 3 - remove similar bases
2. Example #2: 8^(X) = 32
1. 2^(3X) = 2^(5)
2. 3X = 5
3. X = 5/3
3. Example #3: ½X = 8
1. ½X = ½^(-3)
2. X = -3

II. Quadratic Equations with 1 Variable

1. a quadratic equation is defined as:
1. ax^(2) + bx + c = 0
2. Examples:
1. 2x^(2) = 0; here, a = 2, b = 0, and c = 0
2. 3x^(2) + 9x = 0; a = 3, b = 9, c = 0
3. 4x^(2) – 16 = 0 a = 4, b = 0, c = -16
4. x^(2) + 2x + 3 = 0 a = 1, b = 2, c = 3
3. Methods of solving
1. FACTORING
1. factoring 1 side of the equation to isolate X
2. Examples
1. 3x^(2) + 9x = 0
1. (3x)(x+3) = 0 - factor the right side
Note: there are two terms on the left side of the equation: 3x, and x+3. They can be
divided to form 2 equations, shown here
3x x+3
=> 3x = 0 => x+3 = 0
=> x = 0/3 x = -3
=> x = 0

2. SQUARE ROOT PROPERTY

1. getting the square root of both sides to better simplify the equation
2. Examples
1. x^(2) = 25 - given
1. x = 5 - find the sqr root of x^(2) and 25
2. 5x^(2) = 20 - given
1. x^(2) = 4 - divide by 5
2. x = 2 sqr root both sides
3. can be applied to the cube of a variable
3. COMPLETING THE SQUARE
1. creating a new equation by adding, subtracting
2. works hand in hand with factoring
3. Example:
1. x^(2) – 12x + 7 = 0 - given. Note: it cannot be factored
2. x^(2) – 12x = -7 - subtract 7 from both sides
3. x^(2) – 12x + 36 = 29 - use the formula (b/2)^(2) to find your
third term. In this case, we will be using 12. Add the result to both sides
4. (x-6)^(2) = 29 - factor
5. x – 6 = (sqr root)[29] - square root
6. x = (sqr root)[29] +6 - final answer
4. QUADRATIC FORMULA
1. This is the formula:
2. By using this formula, you
won't have to mess with the
equation
3. Example:
1. x^(2) + 7x – 8 = 0 - given
2. a = 1, b = 7, c = 8 - identify your values
3. -7 (+/-) (sqr root)[81] / 2 - after awhile, you're left with
this. You will be doing 2 equations, one for the positive 81, and the negative

+ (sqr root)[81] - (sqr root)[81]

=> 3x = 0 => x+3 = 0
=> x = 0/3 x = -3
=> x = 0
