One Week Unit Plan

Middle and High School (secondary level) Health and Physical Education
Goal for unit: Learn basketball fundamentals
Students should know this material in my unit because physical activity is critical to the
development and maintenance of good health. The goal of physical education is to
develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence
to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity.

1. The Standards that I will be addressing are the National Association for Sport and
Physical Education (NASPE).
Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to
perform a variety of physical activities.
Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies,
and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity.
Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others
in physical activity settings.
Standard 6: Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression,
and/or social interaction.

2. Objectives:
Day 1: Teach proper technique to handle the basketball.
Day 2: Teach standard cross-overs in ball-handling.
Day 3: Learn to make different types of passes in basketball.
Day 4: Learn form shooting.
Day 5: Use skills learned in basketball game.

3. Introduction:
I will tell students my background knowledge and prior experiences of my basketball
career. After I share my information I will ask students to share information about
themselves and ask for their reasoning and interest in basketball. After the introductions I
will give an overview of what I will be teaching students and the expectations, standards,
and rules set for the class. I will hopefully reach out to students so that are motivated and
interested to learn the fundamentals and skills needed for basketball.

5. Closure: I will close the first week lesson of review and feedback on the students
performance and observation I saw throughout the week. I will continue to encourage
students to keep on working in and out the classroom and to keep pushing through
obstacles. I relate basketball and physical activity to students and provide an overview of
the future lessons in store for students. And lastly I will let students know that Im open
for any questions or concerns.
6. Independent practice/ formative assessment: If I have done my job correctly students
should have the desire and motivation to want to practice the skills on their own to
enhance them for sport or lifetime fitness. At the end of the week unit I will have students

observe another to student to see where their skills are at by testing them with a skills
assessment and also this gives them a way to analyze another individual.
Yes

No

Does the student dribble the

ball properly?
Does the student keep their
elbow in when they shoot?
Does the student place his or
her hands on the ball properly?

7. Materials:
I will provide students with the proper material and equipment needed for drills and
activities. Students will have to have their own indoor shoes and proper basketball
clothing for class.

The one week plan will include:

a. Tests and activities will test the students knowledge and the level of skills in a certain
area of the fundamentals in basketball. The way basketball works is drills and
activities will show students strength and weaknesses in certain areas.
b. There will be drills that will require small groups or pairs and the entire class as a
whole.
c. Students will have to read about the standard rules and fundamentals about
basketball.
d. Students will have to write out their observations when they test other students to see
if they are performing the proper skills at the end of the week.
e. Physical activity will never be used for punishment. Depending on the scale of the
behavior issue the situation with the student will be handled properly.
f. Technology is a big part of education now and is a big part of basketball. Students
will watch film on practices to get a better view of the production and things that need
to be worked on.
g. For students with disabilities the lesson will be set to fit the student. Drills and
activities can be changed as long as the standards are met and the content of the
curriculum is being taught.
h. Multicultural diversity will not be an issue throughout basketball lessons. It will bring
students together and the game of basketball is played by all races and cultures.
i. Students will have to have higher thinking due to fatigue and challenges held in the
drills and activities to make sure that the students develop the fundamental skills
needed to play the game of basketball.
j. The lessons will have different learning and a variety of teaching styles to accomplish
the skill that needs to be learned that day.
