first and second conditional and create their own sentences using the second
conditional.
Class time: 1 Hour
Population: Geared towards Spanish speakers learning English.
Resources: Computer with Internet or iPhone with external speaker, lyrics
handout.
Assumed knowledge: Students will have basic knowledge of the first conditional
and modal verbs: would, could, and might.

Description and Justification:
Students interpret examples of second conditional sentences. Students develop new
language skills through learning the second conditional. A Spanish singer, Enrique
Iglesias singing English lyrics that bridges the gap between two different cultures.
Students find the context more relatable as they already know the singer and song.
The distinction of a Native Spanish speaker, Enrique Iglesias and his lyrics in English
showing his success as a L2 learner of English. Spanish speaking students will
associate with Enrique Iglesias and become more intrinsically motivated after
seeing the success of a bilingual speaker.

Procedure - Lesson Stages:

Engage: 15 20 MINUTES
Engage students. Do you have a favorite singer? Do you know any singers
who sing in both English and Spanish? Shakira, Enrique Iglesias. Today we
are going to be listening to song lyrics from Enrique Iglesias.
Review the first conditional, ask for example sentences.
o If + Present Form + Future Form
o Use a students example sentence and write it on the board.
o Ex: If I go to the mall I will buy a dress.
Elicit questions:
o Does the first conditional relate to real events?
o Does the first action relate to the second action? How?
o Can I get the dress without going to the mall?
Distinguish the difference between the first and second conditional.
o First conditional with future form, second conditional with past
simple or continuous + modals (would, could, might) + infinitive
o Ex: If I moved to Australia, I would live in Sydney.

o Ex: If I were in love, I could get married. Make emphases of the use
of were instead of was with first person singular.
o Ex: If I were richer, I might be happier.
Modal + Infinitive + If + Past Simple or Continuous
o I would go to Antarctica if it werent so far away.
o I would live in Kahala if I could afford it.
The second conditional being used to give advice.
o If I were you, I would marry her.
o If I were you, I would eat healthier.
If + negative relates to past events and their results.
o If I didn't come to school, then I wouldnt have learned the second
conditional.
o If I didnt go to your party, then I couldnt have met Sally.

I would review this as a class and have the students each do one sentence
and go around the room with the students answering one at a time.

Practice: 10-15 MINUTES
Hand out lyrics with a gap fill to Enrique Iglesias Hero.
Have students read the lyrics silently and ask questions relating to
vocabulary.
Play the song from the phone or computer without video, only audio.
As a listening exercise and have students complete the gap fill hand out with
the correct words to practice their listening skills.

Let me be your hero
Would you dance
If I ___________ you to dance?
Would you run
And never look back?
________________ you cry
If you saw me crying?
And would you___________ my soul, tonight?
Would you ______________
If I touched your lips?
Would you laugh?
Oh please tell me this.
Now would you die
For the one you ________________?
Hold me in your arms, tonight.

I can be your hero, baby.

I can kiss away the pain.
I will stand by you forever.
You can take my_______________ away.
Would you ________________
That you'll always be mine?
Or __________________ you lie?
Would you run and ____________?
Am I in too deep?
Have I lost my mind?
I don't care...
You're here tonight.
I can be your hero, baby.
I can kiss away the_____________.
I will stand by you forever.
You can take my breath away.

Oh, I just want to hold you.

I just want to hold you, oh, yeah.
I will standby you forever.
You can take my breath away.
I can be your hero.
I can kiss away the pain.
And I will stand by you forever.
You can take my breath away.
You can take my breath away.
I can be your hero.

After the listening exercise, have students find all of the conditionals in the
lyrics in pairs.

Activate: 20 - 25 MINUTES
Put the students in pairs and have them create two more conditional
sentences that relate to the lyrics of the song.
Students will write their two sentences on the board and present them to the
class.
After all the students have presented, students will then vote on their
favorite lyrics, students cannot vote for their own lyrics.
The lyrics with the most votes will be crowned the winner.

Homework:
Explore other English songs that use the second conditional. Identify the
second conditional sentence(s) in the lyrics. Bring the song lyrics with

highlighted sentences and two additional second conditional sentences of

your own that relate to the song. Due the following class.
Show students how to Google second conditional songs in English before
class ends so they have a better understanding of the ease of the assignment.

Filler:
5-10 Minutes:
Second conditional chain. Have students begin a chain of second
conditionals. One student begins the chain with an If-statement, the
following student finishes with modal + infinite to correlate to the statement.
Ex: If I lived in Europe, I would live in France. If I lived in France, I would
live in Paris. If I lived in Paris, I would work in a big company. If I worked for
a big company, I would be successful. If I were successful, I would have a
mansion. If I had a mansion, I would overlook the Eiffel Tower. Etc. Etc. Etc.
The chain continues until someone makes a mistake, if someone makes a
mistake the chain starts over.

Assessment:
Grade learners homework. See if they have highlighted all the second
conditional sentences in their selected songs, as well as developed correct
sentences of their own.

Caveats and Options:
Larger class size-
Have students work individual or in pairs and turn in lyrics to be reviewed
by teacher rather than assessed as a class.
Have students work in larger groups and create multiple lyrics as a group
and then compare them as a class without voting.
Shorter class period-
Learners can simply write their lyrics but not review them as a class.
Skip the online comparison of the first and second conditional and go directly
to the gap fill exercise.
Skip the gap fill exercise and go directly to the writing of song lyrics.
