Year Level Description Prep

Year level Description

The Religion Curriculum P-12 involves four strands: Sacred Texts, Beliefs, Church and Christian Life. These strands are interrelated and are taught in an integrated way, and
in ways that are appropriate to specific local contexts.
In Prep, students learn about some Old Testament and New Testament stories that tell of a God of love, the creator of all, the goodness of Gods creation, Gods special
relationship with all of creation and Gods plan that people help each other to live safely and happily together, for the good of all.
Students listen to, read and view stories of and about Jesus in the Gospels that tell of Jesus life as a Jew, his mother Mary, his friends and family; of Jesus praying and
teaching others to pray; of his teachings about love, compassion and forgiveness that challenged people about the way they were living; and of his suffering, death and
resurrection. They learn that Christians believe God created people with the freedom to choose between good and bad, right and wrong. They explore examples of times, from
familiar texts and their personal experience, when people make these choices.
Students understand that prayer helps believers follow the teachings of Jesus; to live according to Gods plan. They learn about ways in which believers pray, either alone or
with others, including the Sign of the Cross and Amen. They observe ways in which believers pray together during special celebrations and rituals that mark important times
in the life of believers and in the Church year. They learn about the Church building as a sacred place for believers and the Bible as a sacred book for believers.

Year Level Achievement Standard Prep

Achievement Standard
By the end of Prep, students communicate clearly their ideas, feelings and thoughts about God, the goodness of Gods creation
and Gods plan that people help each other to live safely and happily together, for the good of all. They identify connections
between some Old Testament stories and their personal experience, including the experience of the goodness of creation. They
listen and respond to stories of and about Jesus in the Gospels that tell of Jesus life as a Jew, his mother Mary, his friends and
family; of Jesus praying and teaching others to pray; and of his suffering, death and resurrection. They recognise Jesus
teachings about love, compassion and forgiveness that challenged people about the way they were living. They relate
examples of people having the freedom to choose between good and bad, right and wrong.
Students understand that prayer helps believers to follow the teachings of Jesus; to live according to Gods plan. They
recognise ways in which believers pray either alone or with others, using word, music, action, silence, images, symbols and
nature, and participate with respect in a variety of these prayer experiences, including meditative prayer, the Sign of the Cross,
and Amen. They describe ways in which believers pray together during special celebrations and rituals that mark important
times in the life of believers and in the Church year.

- Sacred space in the classroom
Students add a picture to the wall to show what Christ the
King school looks like (Church and classroom)

Students name one way they can tell the Church is

in the playground, in the Church (ringing bells, singing,
peoples voices)

want to find out?
How can we do
this best?
How will we
gather the
information?
Does what I knew
before still apply?
Does my first idea
still make sense?

Week 3

Discuss with students why they think we come together in

the Church during school and on the weekends
Focused teaching and learning: people gather together to
pray in many places.
Teacher tells students that Jesus prayed regularly and
taught others how to pray. Prayer involves both talking
and listening to God, either alone or with others. Believers
pray with the help of word, music, action, silence, images,
symbols and nature.
Students explore the idea of prayer through class prayer
experiences such as:
- Learning songs such as When we pray by
Michael Mangan
- Sharing stories such as Does God hear my
prayer? and How does God listen?
Students ask their buddies to come and they interview
them about who they can pray to to God, Jesus, Saints,
Holy Spirit
Introduce PITW Treat others as you would like to be
treated

Week 4

Pose the question to students Where do we hear about

Jesus praying?
Introduce students to the Bible by beginning a visual
timeline for the classroom that will be added to
throughout the year e.g. Us at Christ the King today, Jesus
(new testament), creation (old testament)
As a whole class students explore the world of the text
for the mandated scripture in Luke 11: 1- 4 of Jesus
teaching his disciples how to pray (Jesus taught his
disciples to pray The Catholic Childrens Bible 1607)
Students explore the world of the text through a range of
literacy activities:
- Key words: disciples, praying, Jesus, forgive
- Strange words: honour, kingdom, sins,
tempted, wrongs
Discuss with students how some of these words will make
sense as we explore lots of stories of God and Jesus
throughout the year
Focus students on forgive us (through prayer we ask for
forgiveness) and help us (through prayer we ask for
help)
Introduce the S of WEST. S is for Sorry. We say sorry when
we make weak choices. We can say sorry to God when we
make mistakes as well and he forgives us

Introduce PITW It takes great strength to be sensible

(Evidence of Religion Curriculum: Students listen and respond to

stories in the Gospels of Jesus praying and teaching others to
pray, including teaching his disciples (Luke 11:1-4).

Students create a response to some key questions:

- When can we pray?
- Where can we pray?
- How can we pray?
e.g. Buddies can ask the questions and record students on ipads
(Evidence of Success Criteria: Students identify some occasions
when believers pray alone (personal prayer) and pray with
others (communal prayer). Recognise elements that help
believers pray)
Introduce students to Christian meditation in prayer garden and
focus on nature to enhance their meditation experience. Listen
to the sounds around. Discuss with students the beauty of
creation and how we need to care for it.
Introduce the T in WEST Thank you. how do we say Thank
You. Make thank you notes for our buddies. We can say Thank
you to God for our beautiful world.

Drawing
conclusions/Conne
ctions
So what have I
learnt?
If I know this, how
can I connect it with
my world?

Brainstorm with students what Christ The King school has

felt like over the past few weeks
Record students words on visual wall and identify what
has felt good and not so good (connect to strong and weak
choices)
PITW Pursue your personal best

Review the brainstorm in the tuning in phase and connect

to the self-mastery checklist: Be
- Am I doing the right thing or wrong thing
- Am I making a strong decision or a weak
decision
- Are my feelings in charge of my actions or is
my thinking in charge?
- Am I running away from the problem or am I
dealing with it?
- Am I being my own boss or am I inviting my
teacher to be my boss?

Taking Action
(reflecting,
evaluating)
So what if you know
this what are you
going to do about it?
How is this going to
change you? What
will you do now?

Is my teacher trying to help me or hurt me?

Invite the parents to come to class to join with the class for prayer.
Children will set up the sacred space, use symbols, words, actions and
music (rainbow song) and parents can join in with Christian mediation.
