2. Lesson Goals, Outcomes/Activity Objectives: Students will explore the differences

between acids and bases.
Instructional Objectives
Students will make a hypothesis on what will happen to the cabbage juice, then
test different substances to see if they are acids or bases with 100% accuracy.

2.2. Relevant Local District Outcomes, State (KSDE.org) and/or National

Standards:
Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused
questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.

3. Assessment/Evaluation:
I know students have achieved the lesson when they fill out their science notebook
with a hypothesis, experiment, observation, and draw conclusions on what
happened.

4. Adaptations: 1.Gearing down for students who may struggle with the lesson, (e.g., ELL, etc.)
might include:
For students who may struggle during this lesson I will give them an outline of what
they need to have written down.
2.Gearing up for higher achieving students who may need alternate challenges
such as:
For students who over achieve this lesson I will have them make a list of substances
that they would try with the cabbage juice.
6. References/Resources Used: -

Spangler, Steve. (2010). Greenleaf Book Group Press. Texas.

7. Instructional Design A.
Anticipatory Set To start off the lesson I am going to show the class a large
glass of cabbage juice, and ask students what they think this is, and what they
hypothesize will happen if I pour different substances into it.
b. Communication of Objectives Today we are going to explore elephants.

Today with this juice I am going to pour substances into it.

I have poured two different substances into this cabbage juice and one time it
turned green, and one time it turned red. What do you think this means?
This makes them base, or an acid.
I want you to look up on your chrome books what a base and an acid is and
write what it is in your science journal, then we will discuss.
We will then add more substances to the cabbage juice, to determine if they
are an acid or a base as well.
Last we will write our conclusion.

*7.2. Input
When we add different substances into the cabbage juice it changes color according
to if it an acid or base.
*7.3. Modeling Teacher to student modeling: The teacher will model to the student by writing what
needs to be written in their science journals on the smart board.
*7.4. Guided Practice
The students will be guided on what is happening when I am putting substances
into the cabbage juice.
*7.5. Checks for Understanding
Throughout the lesson, I will be checking for understanding by asking the following
questions
below:

What is a base?
What is an acid?
What is a neutral substance?
What is this purple juice?
Why does the juice change colors?

7.6. Independent Practice/Assignment The students will individually write their conclusion in their science notebooks.

7.7. Closure, Wrap-up

To end the lesson I will ask students what substance they were surprised
changed the cabbage juice.
