Lesson Title: My Nature Walk

Objective of Lesson:
Students will gain an appreciation for the natural environment and will utilize their five sense
sight, smell, taste, touch, hear to observe their surroundings. This is a lesson that happens
four times a year once during each season so that students can compare and contrast what
they observed during the seasons.
ISTE-T Standards:
1. Facilitate and Inspire student learning and creativity: a) promote, support, and model
creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness. C) Promote student reflection using
collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students conceptual understanding and
thinking, planning, and creative processes.
2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments: a) design or
adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to
promote student learning and creativity. B) Develop technology-enriched learning
environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become
active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning,
and assessing their own progress.
Grade: 1st
Classroom Size: 30 students, 1 paraprofessional
Time: 45 minutes
Source Materials: My Nature Walk 5 senses worksheet (I sawI smelledI heard.I
touchedI tasted)
Teaching Materials:
-

One computer, one projector, Wordle, 5 senses worksheet, pencils, a playground

Engagement: The teacher will go over the five senses to make sure that students are all on the
same page and can accurately describe what they observe with their five senses while outside.
The teacher will then go over the rules so that students know the boundaries to which they can

explore and to inform the students that they need to get the teacher before they taste anything
outside so that the teacher can okay the items. Students will be shown how to record their
observation and will be given a time constraint of roughly 25 minutes to go out and observe.
Safety Plan: Students will be given boundaries by the teacher as to how far they can go.
Additionally, the playground area that students will be exploring is near an entryway into the
school so that if extreme weather conditions arrive, students will be able to get inside the
building quickly. There is a poison control contact card located in the classroom that the teacher
will bring outside for extreme circumstances or emergencies.
Internal Assessment: The teacher will ask the students if they can point to how they see, how
they smell, how they taste, how they hear and how they touch so that the teacher has
confirmation that the students understand their task. The teacher will also ask students to make
predictions each season about what they think they will see, taste, touch, smell, and hear while
they are outside. Students will then have the opportunity to compare their predictions to what
they actually observed.
Accommodations:
For students in wheelchair: Students who are in wheelchairs will be able to stay up on the
pavement terrain of the playground and will still be able to smell, hear, and see. The teacher
will bring items up for the student to feel and to taste so that students with disabilities have the
opportunity to participate as well.
ESL Students: the teacher will demonstrate the five senses so that the ESL students can see how
to complete each step. The teacher can help them with their writing and explanations if need
be.
Presentation of Lesson: Before going out to the playground, students will have the opportunity
to make predictions on a sheet of paper at their desk. While outside, they will be recording
observations of their five senses. When the students come back in, they will each take a turn at
the computer where they will each type one or two words from their observations from any of
the five sense. After each student has had the chance to complete this, a word cloud will be
formed and projected onto board for all students to see. Every season, the teacher will take one

to two days to discuss the climate of each season and relate those to the classroom
observations.
Sharing & Review: After each student has put one to two words into the Wordle word cloud, it
will be projected onto the board in front of the classroom and the students will have a few
minutes to look it over. After they have time on their own to observe the results, the class will
come together and discuss some of the observations that were repeated and why that was the
case. This is an opportunity for students to reflect, analyze and inquire.
