Expected Start Date: December 1, 2015
Expected End Date: April 1, 2016
GUIDELINES
1. Proposal submission timeline: Proposals should be submitted at least one month prior to the expected
start date of the experience. International experiences require at least two months notice. Contact your
honors advisor immediately for any exceptions.
2. Proposal length: While the quality of the proposal is most important, strong proposals are typically 3-4
pages single-spaced.
3. Proposal format: Please maintain the proposal format (e.g. headers, layout)
4. Time commitment: Experiences should consist of at least 75-90 hours of preparation, execution, and
reflection. This is approximately equivalent to the commitment of honors seminars and pre-approved
experiences.
1. Abstract
Briefly describe the experience. What makes this experience personally meaningful? What goals do you have for this
experience? What is your timeline for this experience?
*If you are proposing an international experience, provide an itinerary.
**If you are developing this experience from an existing opportunity (class with a study tour, campus organization, co-op,
etc.) that is not already an honors seminar or pre-approved experience, how will you differentiate your experience from
what is already required of other students?
Initially, college overwhelmed me. I lost my sense of direction and purpose, moving from a small high
school where I was widely known to a college where I was a small fish in a large pond. Throughout my first
semester here at UC, I have met some inspirational leaders on campus that I want to emulate. These men seemed to
be everywhere; every organization or campus activity was filled with them. They were making a difference in the
community outside of the university as well by serving those in the Cincinnati area. Most of them had something in
common: they were in the social fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike). Many credited their success towards Pike
because the fraternity brothers push each other to constantly improve. I rushed Pike during the fall semester
because I wanted to find sense and direction through the extracurricular activities I involved myself in.
For this self-designed experience, I will be merging two of my passion. First, learning how to become a
leader on campus so that I may positively change the University of Cincinnati for the good. Second, serve those less
fortunate in the greater Cincinnati community. In regards to fulfilling the first part of my project, I will be
interviewing the leaders in Pike. In total, I interview 10 guys, each lasting around an hour. My goal is to select these
brothers on the extent of their leadership displayed on campus. In order to become a leader myself, I must learn
tips from those who have already achieved leadership positions on campus. From this experience, I also plan to get
more deeply involved in my community. Back at Elder, my high school, I was active in and around Price Hill,
Elders community. However, here at the University of Cincinnati, I havent been able to effectively integrate
myself into the community yet. Some of the questions I plan on asking include:
What are some of the campus organizations you are involved with?
What are some of the off-campus organization you are involved with?
How has Pike helped you get involved on campus and in the greater Cincinnati area?
Do you have any regrets about your years at UC, regarding your involvement?
I plan to publicize to my Pike pledge class the dates for various campus organizations and
service activities through the creation of a Facebook page.

December 1-February 15: Conduct and Complete Interviews
For those 10 Pikes I interviewed, I plan to produce personal bios on each of them to my pledge
class and other active members of Pike.
March 1-April 1: Guidebook
Create and publish a guidebook for freshman on navigating campus involvement and
community engagement for future Pikes.

Although Matthew Yung graduated before my freshman year began, his name still carries weight around
Pike. Matthew is credited with many Pike council, most recently being inducted onto the national council. All the
older leaders of Pike, admire Matthew in the way I admire them. Matthew will serve as my mentor in helping me
shape my self-designed experience. He seems the logical choice because of his lingering passion to improve Pike. I
will plan to frequently meet him at the Pike house, to share my updates with him and have him sit in on some
interviews. Additionally, I will email him my final guideline for his review. His insights can also shape how I
present the information to incoming freshman and how I relay it to my pledge class.
