History of Spanish Architecture

Roman - 19 BC. Introduced arches.


Pre-Romanesque - Brought lattices, horseshoe arch, exterior decoration.
Mudejar - Moors (Islamic influence). Known for extensive use of bricks in
buildings.
Romanesque - 10th to 12th centuries. Chessboard style taqueado jaques
and the Islamic-style multifoil arch.
Renaissance - late 15th century. Mixed with other European cultures. Also
presented repeated pattern.

Baroque - Churrigueresque (intricate surface decoration)


Colonial - combination of Native American and Moorish influences.
19th century - Introduction of iron and glass in basic construction.
20th century - Mixed traditional architectural styles with new; predecessor
of modern architecture.

Conclusions
1.

Reflects community values and is used to represent the movement of


people. Also reflects the impact of political events

Terracotta roof tiles are a good source of insulation in the summer and they
are also very durable. The disadvantages would be that they are very heavy
and some roofs cannot withstand the weight of these tiles.

3. Similar to Italian architecture, a Spanish-style house typically has a lot of
gentle curves and arches, and the warm or white colors on the exterior signify
this style. There is also use of clay tiles on the roof on both styles.

The most opposite architecture would probably be the Modern style, which
relies on very simple decoration and usually lacks the gentle curves that the
Spanish style possesses.
