LEB-PALS CONFERENCE ON LEGAL EDUCATION’
PRESENTATION of J. ARTURO D. BRION
August 17, 2013, San Carlos University, Cebu City
Thank you very much for your invitation. I entertained :10,second thoughts
in giving my noc to the role you assigned me and to the topic ‘Producing ethical,
balanced, mindful lawyers and leaders: Should legal education take on this task?”
This is a subject -hat has been on my mind, in one aspect or another, in the last few
years. | can thus go straight to the point and immediately tell you that, for me, the
answer is obvious — who else will, and who has a closer interest than us, lawyers
and educators, in undertaking this task?
I was very happy, too, with your invitation because I knew it “would bring .
“me to a gathering of like-minded, colleagues ‘in the profession, tackling the
questions and the topies that I have been waiting for a long time for the legal
academe to ask. Seeing and heating these questions now asked and their vatious
aspects answered; with Justice Hilarion Aquino here, focused on his mission of
reforming legal education; with you here as the front liners in |2gal education; and
with us in the Court to: provide support and’ capability for action, | believe that at
long last we may.well’be on'the road towards improving the teechihg of ethics, and
values, and uplifiing of ethics and values of the legal professior itself. I hope that,
at some point, the acctimulation of these efforts will even affect our society as a
whole. f
