National Conference

for University
Guidance Counsellors
April 24th - 27th, 2016
Halifax, Nova Scotia

Dear
As we work to ensure our students receive the best possible post-secondary guidance throughout
their time at our school, it is critical that our schools continue to find innovative ways to help
students, parents and families plan for university. For this reason, I am proposing that I attend
the National Conference for University Guidance Counsellors being hosted by Armbrae Academy
in Halifax, Nova Scotia from April 24th - 27th, 2016.
The sessions that I attend during the conference will provide me with the knowledge, skills,
perspective and materials I need to make a positive impact at our school and to help us achieve
our goals.
Selected sessions of interest will focus on the following topics:
Workshops on top national scholarships including the Loran Scholars program;
Using technology and apps as a tool for university planning;
Helping students (and families) transition to university-level study;
Incorporating the Strong Personal Interest Inventory in our guidance program;
Understanding the redesigned SAT;
Navigating NCAA regulations and supporting students through the process;
Workshop on the recently revised Common Application;
The globalized university experience in the 21st Century;
Development of a strong school profile;
Studying in the UK.
This is the only specialized conference of its kind for independent school university counsellors in
Canada, and it will bring together school counselors from across the country, university
admissions officers from both Canada and abroad, and other higher education professionals to
share best practices. Through information sessions, workshops and networking opportunities,
this conference promotes viable post-secondary options for students from Canadian independent

schools, allows for face-to-face networking with university admissions representatives from
Atlantic Canada and international institutions, and allows for face-to-face networking amongst
new and experienced independent school counsellors.
During the conference, we will have the opportunity to experience the following university
campuses first-hand:
Saint Francis Xavier University (optional complimentary pre-conference tour)
Saint Marys University
Acadia University
Nova Scotia College of Art & Design
Mount Saint Vincent University
Dalhousie University
University of Kings College
Mount Allison University (optional complimentary post-conference tour)
University of New Brunswick (optional complimentary post-conference tour)
In addition, the conference will include an International College Fair which is bringing
prestigious post-secondary institutions from around the world to Armbrae Academy on Sunday
April 24th. All conference attendees will be taking part in an exclusive networking reception with
admissions representatives from schools which to date include: University of Notre Dame, New
York University, University of Southern California, University of St. Andrews, University College
London, Durham University, and Emory University, amongst others.
