Lesson Procedure:
Warm-up (10 minutes)
tells three things about him because T picked up three m&m candies. However, there is one
lie of three things. Ss should find out which statement is a lie. In the same way, students do
this activity in groups.
Pre-Task (5 minutes)
T distributes Handout #1 and then read the story aloud. Students take a look at and read
again the story by themselves.
T asks Ss to brainstorm in pairs or groups about the story to find out key words, phrases
and sentences that are relevant to the story. At this time, Ss are asked to jot them down on
the paper. After that, T asks Ss what they wrote and writes some useful expressions on the
board.
T has Ss create a dialog based on the story. At this point, Ss are asked to include the key
words, phrases and sentences that they brainstormed in the previous step.
T introduces features of spoken language so that Ss are encouraged to include them in their
dialogue. T introduces Pause Fillers (e.g. uh, um, well, you know, I mean) and Vagueness
Expressions (e.g. kind of, sort of,).
When Ss are creating the dialogue, T, as a facilitator, walks around monitoring Ss work
and helps occasionally, but avoids giving corrections on the spot.
<Role-Play>
After creating the dialog, Ss perform their dialog in front of the class. When one group is
performing their dialog, other students are asked to listen carefully and to take notes in
order to give comments after the role-play.
T and other Ss give comments about what they like and things that can be improved.
T passes out Handout #2 (Asking for a favor politely) to the class. Ss are required to take a
look at it for a couple of minutes. While they are reading, Ss highlight and underline
anything that they like and that they find useful.
Comparing their dialog with the conversation that T distributed, Ss are asked to find out
any words, phrases, and expressions that can be included in their dialog. Ss also need to
find out some features of spoken language.
T has Ss incorporate the useful expressions into their generated-dialog. After that, Ss are
asked to do the role-play again with the revised dialogue.
Post-Task (5 minutes)
T has Ss write down two things on their scratch paper; one is what they have learned today,
the other is questions that they do not understand today.
After that, Ss turn in their generated-dialog and the paper to the T. In next session, T will
give back to their papers with comment and feedback.
Handout #1
Story
Todd works for a company. Paula is Todds boss. Todd is planning to go on a
trip this weekend. He wants to take this Friday off because there is usually
traffic congestion on Friday afternoons. If he can take Friday off, he can leave
early. However, Todd needs to finish his work before leaving. Now, Todd is
going to ask his boss, Paula, if he can take Friday off.
Note: Since Paula is Todds boss, Todd needs to make his request politely.
