Lesson Plan Analysis and Reflection

Context
Skill: Conversation
Teaching Point: Making a request politely
Level: High-Intermediate
Number of Students: 19
What worked well? Why?
First of all, because this class was the first meeting, the ice-breaking was needed in order
to introduce and to know each other. In terms of it, I think that the M&M candy game as an icebreaking worked well. Everyone should tell one lie when they introduce themselves. This made
students get involved in the activity. In addition, from their brainstorm activity to their role
playing activity, students followed the steps very well because they were fully creative to
generate their dialog from the given story. I saw that one pair of the students set the specific
creative situation on their dialog. Lastly, before the role playing, I asked them to do role playing
like the best actor and actress. Due to this point, they seemed to more enjoy the role playing
activity.
What didnt work well? Why?
One of my objectives on this lesson was to make a balance between fluency and accuracy.
Since this lesson was based on TBLT, it focused on fluency. So, after all inductive activities, in
order to focus on accuracy, I wanted point out two target expressions which can be used when
people make a request politely. In my lesson plan, students were supposed to incorporate two
target expressions into their generated dialog and to practice the dialog again through by doing
the role playing. However, the time was not available enough to practice two expressions.

Another point that did not work well was to provide comments and feedbacks. Even though I
walked around monitoring students work, I could not cover all of students and could not give
enough feedbacks and comments because I could not cover all of the students. I could not give
enough and detailed feedbacks when they showed off their dialogs.
What changes would you make if you were to teach the lesson in the future?
First of all, I would not teach this lesson in my first class. Since they might not get used
to the class yet, some of students would be hesitate to talk and brainstorm with other students in
their first meeting and would be hesitate to show their best acting during the role playing. Also, I
think that I could not cover all of steps that I planned because this lesson includes many steps
that can be complicated in first class. The last change that I would make is to provide comment
and feedback. If I teach this lesson again, I will have final role playing time in next class. In
other words, I will have students practice their role playing after the class as homework. When
students present their role playing in the following class, other students and I will give feedbacks
and comments. This will be helpful for them to know what they have done well and what can be
improved.
