Lesson # 1 in a series of Food groups lessons

Brief Lesson Description: Sorting the food into different food groups.
Performance Expectation(s): in the end of the lesson I expect the kids to acknowledge all the food groups.
Specific Learning Outcomes:

ALL: All are able to identify the food groups.

MOST: Most are able to sort the food into respective groups

FEW: A few can explain how the various food groups helps us to stay healthy.
Narrative / Background Information
Prior Student Knowledge:
The students already know the names of each food group and took a highlighting on each food group food.

basic food groups.

The kids might mix between the food groups, especially the protein and the carbohydrates.

ENGAGE: Opening Activity Access Prior Learning / Stimulate Interest / Generate Questions:
The teacher will show a video to the students and then she will ask questions related to the video that is as a whole class discussion.
What was the topic of the video?
Who can tell me the five basic food groups?
Also, I can ask about an example for each one. (The kids who know this will be fluent with the rest of the class content.)

EXPLORE: Lesson Description Materials Needed / Probing or Clarifying Questions:


What food group does you like eat from it the most? If you eat *** then raise your hand. Then (in pairs discussion) Teacher will ask them
to ask each other which food should we not each a lot? And would make us sick?
How do you know that? (Student gives reasons that are discussed with the teacher.)
EXPLAIN: Concepts Explained and Vocabulary Defined:
A small competition on the PowerPoint that includes having some food and the kids needs to sort it into its food group. This activity is a
whole class activity. The teacher will ask What food is it? then if the teacher feels the kids are acknowledge to the groups she will ask
individually if not she will ask them to discuss in pairs then raise their hands if they finished discussing.
While doing this activity teacher will explain why this food is from that group,.. etc

ELABORATE: Applications and Extensions: Teacher will ask the students to draw their favorite food in a blank paper, and then sort it into its
food group by writing the food group name above it.

Teacher will ask some of the kids to present their work, with discussing if their work is correct or not. And why?

Teacher will ask the kids to search in home for pictures for a full meal that contains the 5 food groups.
