Knowledge of
content and
development

Lesson well organised and lesson plan handed to observer

several days before the assessment. Instructions for the
lesson on the whiteboard things to do today, you went
through this clearly. Expectations of books being out and
phones away were clearly voiced. Begin lesson by asking
who has not finished the assessment. Others were given
instructions verbally for lesson/instructions were already on
the board.
You are well prepared in terms of knowledge of the topic.
You come to me well in advance if you want to get your
head around a topic.

Variety of activities
Use of resources

Some students finishing test. Others were using laptops for

research to make a poster. Notes were taken in student
books.

Preparation and
Introduction to
lesson

Aimed at
appropriate level

Great pitch for the right level.

Questioning skills

As you worked around the room you posed questions to the

students to deepen their thinking about what they were
researching.

Use of written
material

You used the projector with the power point on it for

instructions. Whiteboard with instructions.
You had both written and verbal instructions for the
students. Everything was clear. You asked if there were any
questions and allowed time for students to volunteer these
(not that there were any).

Clarity of
instructions

Great explanation of how long the activity will take and to

show them where you are going with this activity.

Time allocation
Classroom
management

You do this
well but just
some
suggestions
to build on.

Girls who came in late were addressed (6 students late).

Well done. Just a thought-Set the bar of what you expect of
punctuality by sending them straight to the Atrium in future.
They arrived after the second bell. They wont do it again
and they will get the message.
Lots of girls were talking while you were telling them the
instructions. Remember wait time. Take as long as you need
and they will get the message quickly as they will hate
waiting. You did do this at the end of the lesson but there
needs to be a bit more consistency in this so that they just
get used to it.

Good addressing of the girls on her phone. It was great that

you continued to monitor these two girls as they seemed
easily distracted. Back on phone (which you confiscatedawesome!), talking off topic. You are great at staying on top
of their behaviour and questioning them on the topic.

Handling of
discipline

Be firmer with them in terms of setting high expectations.

There werent any discipline issues but make sure you earn
their respect more by getting them to be quiet and putting
phones away (this was the main issue).

Teacher
movement

Up the front to begin with then moved to the side and

around the room while they were doing the activity.

Use of Voice

Rapport with
Students

Ending of lesson

You have a good variety in your voice and can exert sound
when needed to get the students attention but can also
come down to the students level and use a softer voice to
have a one on one conversation.
You have a great relationship with these girls, you have fun
banter but also have boundaries to show what you expect of
them. A few high fives and laughs shared with Pasifika
students-great way to build up your relationship and
hopefully encourage success with these students.
Laptops shutdown well before the end of the lesson. Girls
who were outside doing the test came back in. Students told
what they were doing tomorrow. You grilled them about their
behaviour and your expectations, this is great! Exactly what
I was hoping to see. Well done!

Classroom manner
You are very approachable and it is clear that students respect you and you them. Your
classroom presence is good, you move around and come down to the students level when
talking to them.
Areas of strength
You are well organised and prepared in your lesson planning and this is reflected in your
teaching in the classroom. You give students clear instructions.
You have a great relationship with these students and this shows through humour and them
feeling comfortable with you. The feel safe in your classroom and can easily approach you.
You have strong content knowledge and ability to get the students to think deeper.
Great to grill the girls about expectations and what you expect from their behaviour. You did a
great a job at this. Let it be the beginning of the expectations you set out for them.
Areas for development

Continue to develop your classroom management strategies. Mainly your expectations of the
students e.g. come in quietly and get your books out, phones away, lateness, waiting for
quiet/not talking while others are.
One idea to combat the phone issue is to collect them in at the start of the lesson (for the
students who are repeat offenders).
Achievement of aims
You lesson plan matched your lesson and where you were going with this activity this week.
