When it comes to BrightStar Cares Caregiver of the Year award,

its not the easiest job to select finalists, let alone a winner. All of
the stories that come in are extremely touching and very
emotional.
The work of a caregiver is inherently personal, so its no wonder
these compassionate people are often described as being like
family to those in their care as well as their families. But alas, we
must and, this year, we recognized 4 wonderful finalists and
announced the 2015 Caregiver of the Year award winner, Kareen
Mason of the BrightStar Care of Norwalk office.

Kareens story started with a call from the concerned daughters

about their father who had been recovering from a terrible fall
that left him wheelchair-bound when he was diagnosed with
stage 4 mouth cancer.

Just when things couldnt get any worse, a bright, shining light
entered the fray: Kareen Mason. I had never seen a caregiver
commit herself to the task of not only caring for my dad as part of
the nursing support team, but also befriending him. Kareen
listened to my dads stories at a time when it was hard to
understand him in contrast with others that simply smiled and
nodded.

The family was so moved by Kareens ability to connect with their

father that they wrote in not one but two nominations for Kareen.
Then, in October, the daughters who nominated her along with
the BrightStar Care of Norwalk team held an event to surprise
Kareen with the wonderful news that she was the 2015 Caregiver
of the Year finalist for the Northeast region:
