Run down:

-The class is going to talk to a partner for thirty seconds about what they think our
lesson is about.
-Have the class share their thoughts.
-Tell the class that they should take notes since there will be a game afterwards.

PROBLEMS:

Few opportunities to interact in typical classrooms.

Teacher Talk
- Teachers dominate the linguistic aspect of the lesson.
- Only ask yes or no questions and one word answer questions.
BENEFITS:

Brain stimulation: interesting and engaging activities play an important role

in learning. When students are engaged, more of the pleasure structures in the
brain are activated more so then just memorizing information.

Increased motivation: interacting with others increases motivation and

comprehension.

Reduced Risk: Some students cannot focus on the content when teachers call
on students for answers. The brain triggers a threat response Talking in pairs
minimizes the risk and allows ideas to flow more easily.

More processing time: Students need time to process information. Direct

instruction should be limited to short increments, followed by discussion.

Increased attention: Pairs or working in groups can heighten attention levels

FREQUENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR INTERACTION AND

DISCUSSION:

Need to have a balanced teacher-to-student talk and encourage student

participation

GROUPING:
GOOD
1. Whole class groups: are benefice for introducing new information and
concepts, modeling processes, and review.
2. Flexible small groups: promote the development of multiple
perspectives and encourage collaboration.
3. Partnering: encourages success because it provides practice
opportunities, scaffolding, and assistance from classmates.

Grouping maintains interest. It Increases the chance that students preferred mode
of instruction will be matched.

Use at least two different modes of grouping for each lesson.

BAD

TRACKING is the practice of providing instruction to students in instructional

groups segregated by ability or performance level has been found to be inequitable
because it differentiates across socioeconomic and ethnic lines, and it promotes
differentiated expectations for student success.

Teachers will put ELL students in groups will low performing students regardless
of academic ability and performance.

SUFFICIENT WAIT TIME FOR STUDENT RESPONSES

Wait time has been found to increase student discourse and more student-tostudent interaction.

Teachers should let students express their thought fully, without interruption.
Usually teachers immediately fill the void of silence that comes after asking
students a question.

ELL students need time to process their ideas in a new language and need
additional time to formulate the phrasing of their thoughts. Need a patient
approach to classroom participation.

While ELL and other students who need time to answer questions, have the other
students who may be impatient to answer the question, have them write their
answer down on a piece of paper.

NATIVE LANGUAGE:

Give opportunities for ELL students to clarify concepts in the first language. It
helps them better understand the content.

Have some resources that are in their native language that correspond to the
English version that is being taught. Labeling around the classroom.

SKITS/SCENARIOS:
1. Encourage students to elaborate their responses instead of just saying yes/no or
one word answers.
2. Give time for the students to express their thoughts.
3. Teacher ensures that students are able to work together.
