Practicum Reflection-Guided Reading Lesson

Name of Book: The Magic of Migration

Level: O

1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related
to the area of focus did the teacher include in the lesson today?
Todays focus was phonics and comprehension. The activities that I did was have
the students do a KWL chart and I also had them read from their own book that I
made for them so that they can sound out any words that they were not familiar
with.

2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn?
One thing that went well with the lesson was the students actually being able to
read the book instead of me reading it all to them. They were all eager to read their
section of the book. The students learned that migration does not always mean
that the animal dies and that sometimes it is ok if they do not know the word.

3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or

confirmed something from today dealing with student achievement in the
area of reading. (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary,
comprehension, before/during/after reading
Before the reading I thought that the students would know what migration was and
they comprehended the subject pretty well and I was wrong. During the reading I
was unsure of some of the vocabulary words. It really surprised me when the
students read the words correctly. Afterwards I realized that we needed to spend
one more week on actually comprehending what the main idea was.

4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it!

kind of moment. How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience?
Explain the situation.
One got it moment was when a student was struggling with the word salmon. I
waited to see if they could figure it out using context clues and sure enough they
did. The student was super excited to know that they figured it out on their own.

Lesson plan
1) Talk about the word migration.
2) Write down what we know about migration and what we want to know on our
KWL chart.
3) Each student will take turns reading a page from the book.
4) After each section of the book has been read the students will turn their KWL
chart paper over and write down what they think the main idea of the section
was.
5) After they have written it down we will discuss what we think that it is.
6) We will read half of the book and finish the other half next week.
