traditional and nontraditional notation; and
o identification of basic music symbols.

1.5 The student will perform rhythmic patterns that include quarter notes, paired eighth notes,
and quarter rests, using instruments, body percussion, and voice.
1.6 The student will demonstrate the difference between melodic rhythm and steady beat.
1.7 The student will demonstrate melodic rhythm, using instruments, body percussion, and voice.
( In this case, by using patatap and beatlab)
1.9 The student will create music by

o composing simple rhythmic patterns, using nontraditional notation.

Analysis, Evaluation, and Critique

1.13 The student will analyze music by

o recognizing differences in melodic and rhythmic patterns and dynamics.
1.15 The student will demonstrate manners and teamwork that contribute to success in the music
classroom.

2. Procedures/Activities
Sample Activities:
(a) Teacher will create a PowerPoint to show on a smart board quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter
rests.

The PowerPoint also uses images such as a pumpkin and a cat to help students verbally break
down the idea on quarter and eighth notes.
Ex) Pump-kin is two eighth notes and cat is one quarter note.

Students will take turns coming up to the board to play a matching game. They will have to match
the word/photo to the number/type of notes.

(b) Teacher will demonstrate rhythm by pressing keys in patatap.com to keep a steady beat of quarter or
eighth notes.

Students will repeat the demonstrated rhythm on the keyboard.

(c) Teacher will explain and demonstrate the difference between melodic rhythm (by using patatap.com)
and steady beat (by using beatlab.com and patatap.com).

Students will be asked to demonstrate a steady beat in patatap.com.

(d) The classroom will be separated in two halves. One side of the class will be in charge of keeping a
steady beat while the other half of the class takes turns improvising a melodic line on patatap.com. The
two groups will then switch roles and repeat the activity.

3. Assessment
Sample Assessments:
(a) Students will take a personalized quiz on quizrevolution.com to test their understanding of rhythm
(b) Students will be assessed by how they interact/respond to the sample activities.

The smart board matching game, improvisation, and repetition of demonstrated material will
serve as a valid assessment of whether or not students are meeting the objectives.

Assignment
Each student will have an iPad supplied by the school that they can take home.
For homework the student will use the voice recorder to record an example of a steady beat of eighth
notes, a steady beat of quarter notes, and a melody.
Students will create the beats by using a computer keyboard and patatap.com.
Parameters:
(a) There should be 3 separate recordings saved onto the students iPad.
1. Steady beat of quarter notes
2. Steady beat of eighth notes
3. A melody (not a steady beat)
(b) Each recording must be between 10-20 seconds
(c) Title the recordings like so: last name-quarter, last name-eight, last name-melody

Where to go for help:

Students may have their parents email the teacher if they have any questions about the
assignment/curriculum.
Due Date:
Students will turn back in the school iPad with the three recordings saved in the voice recording section
the next day of class.
Rubric:
3 points - Each recording is titled appropriately (1 point each)
3 points - Each recording meets the time length requirement (1 point each)
3 points - Each recording is turned in on time (1 point each)
