Composing an Olympic Fanfare ,..5,,; Name. Form. QRH COMPOSING BRIEF — You have been asked by the Rio 2016 Olympic Committee to compose a fanfare to be performed during the opening of the Olympic Games. Your fanfare will be played as the Olympic Torch is lit, in the main Olympic Arena, as part of the opening ceremony. 1. Fanfares are based on the notes of the harmonic series — any melodic parts should use only these notes c G Cc E G c 2. Fanfares make things important, so they sound important — and are short, so think carefully about the choice of INSTRUMENTS and TIMBRES you use in your Fanfare. You could record the instruments and timbres chosen by your group in the box below 3. Fanfares are like musical exclamation marks (!) — so think carefully about DYNAMICS and remember your piece will be performed outdoors in a large open-space. 4, Remember Fanfares use IMITATION and try to use some imitation in your fanfare e.g. all of the melody parts (trumpets?), could play the same melody but start at different times like a musical echo or “round”. 5. Record your ideas in the box below using staff or graphic notation. 6. Finally, think carefully about whether your piece is suitable for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. Can it be improved in any way?
