Description of Activities and Setting

I will begin the lesson by hooking the interest of children by asking the
students to think of objects they use around the classroom. Then, I will ask
what some of these objects are made of. This will make the students think of
all the different objects they use and what they could be made from.
Students will explore the classroom in pairs to find different objects made of
different materials. Give the students a list of objects to locate in the
classroom. Have the students write what material each object is made from
and compare their physical properties. Next, allow the pairs to explore outside
the school to be able to find other/additional materials that objects are made
from. For example, the tire swing is made from the material rubber.
Let students work with another pair to discuss the different objects they
explored and what the object is made from and used for. Call the class back
together and have a few pairs share their explorations. Ask for any
comparisons of the materials physical properties. Explain to students a
material is what is used to make an object. Explain characteristics of the
materials. For example, shiny, cold, hard, strong, etc. Introduce the materials:
wood, paper, metal. Show an example of each material. Allow the students to
share with the class objects they found that were made of the material wood,
paper, or glass. (CFU) Discuss any differences in the appearances of objects
made from the same or different materials. Ask for any examples where the
students could not determine what material the object was made from. Ask
classmates if they could help the student think of what the material the object
could have been made from. (CFU)
Introduce more materials: glass, plastic, cloth. Have the students practice the
topic in pairs. Place ELL with a strong student. (PID) Give each group of pairs
a box filled with objects that are made from different materials. Have students
determine what material was used to make each object and its use. Also, have
students compare the physical properties of all the objects. Call the class back
together. Hold up an object from each box and have the pairs tell which
material they determined was used to make the object and if they found any
comparisons. (CFU)
Ask open-ended questions to see what the children have learned. (CFU) For
the assessment of the lesson, give the students a worksheet for homework.

6. Assessment Results of
all objectives/skills

Give the students directions to complete the worksheet. Students will look at
pictures of an object and write which material was used to create the object.
Then, the students will be given different materials and have to provide an
example of an object that was created by the corresponding material. Repeat
directions. (PID) This worksheet will see if the students understand the
physical properties of different objects. Students will have met the objective if
they score at least 80% accuracy on the worksheet. Students will have had to
correctly answered 8 or more questions to meet the objective.

Targeted Students Modifications/Accommodations

Student/Small Group Modifications/Accommodations

Accommodations were made for my ELL student

during the sections Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate
Assessment Methods as shown above. Although, it is
not shown that throughout the entire lesson I checked
for understanding and checked in with the ELL student
frequently. I made sure to focus on vocabulary
development. I provided the students with an
explanation of the vocabulary word material. I also
used many visuals throughout the lesson to give
examples of different materials. The ELL student was
also paired with a strong student for added support. I
also repeated myself while giving the directions of the
homework to ensure the ELL student comprehended
the instructions.
