    andindustrial.Factorieswerebuilttomassproducethings.Therewerealotofnewinventions
    to,somesuchasthesteamengineandthespinning
    jenny.Thesteamenginefirstappearedin1698,butin
    1712ThomasNewcomenimprovedit.Thismadeit
    easiertodocertainwork.Thespinningjennyalsohelped
    doworkthatusuallypeoplehadtodobyhand.Itwas
    inventedin1764byJamesHargreaves.Itmadeiteasier
    tospinthewool.Thishelpedpeoplebeabletospinmore
    woolatonceandtheywereabletoproducewaymorethanusual.Thesewerejusttwoofthe
    inventionsoftheindustrialrevolution,howevertherewerealsobadpartoftheindustrial
    revolution.Someincludechildlaborandpoorworkingconditions.

    thatofworkerswerechildren.Childlaborwasacheaperformoflaborsoemployerswereable
    topaychildren1/10ofwhattheypaidgrownmen.Child
    werealsoabletofitintotightspacestofixthebroken
    machines.Manyaccidentsinthefactoryhurtorkilled
    manychildren.Atnightchildrenwouldgohomewithdirt
    andsootontheirfaces.Orphansweresubjecttoslavelike
    laborinreturnforabedtosleepin.Kidswhoweretoo
    youngtoworkthemachineswouldbesenttoworkfortextileworkers.Thepeoplethesechildren

    wenttoworkforwouldoftenverballyabusethemorbeatthem.Ifchildrenwerelatetowork
    theywouldbeweighted,thisiswhentheemployerwouldtieaweightaroundthechild'sneck
    andmakethemwalkupanddowntheaislesasanexampletootherkids.Employerssaidthat
    childlaborwasagoodideabecauseitbuiltcharacter,parentsagreedwiththisbecausethey
    neededtheextraincome.In1938theChildLaborActwaspassed,thismadeworkingconditions
    betterforkids.Kidsunder9couldnotworkatall,kidsthatwere913wereonlyabletowork8
    hoursandkids1418couldonlywork12hours.Theactalsostatedthatkidshadtogotoschool
    foratleast2hoursaday.TheChildrensbureauwasputinplacetomakesureemployerswere
    followingtheserules.

    week,10centsanhour.Themajorityofpeoplewereunskilled
    workers,evenskilledworkerswerenotpayedthatmuch.

    Employerswereonlyconcernedatmakingaprofitandtheywerehappywithallthepeople
    willingtoworkatlittlepay.Alotoftimetheonlylightinthefactorywasthesunlightcomingin
    throughthesmallwindows.Thisbarelyhelpedthoughbecausethemachinewouldspitblack
    sootontopeoplesotheycouldnotseeanyway.Workersonlyreceivedtwobreaks,oneforlunch
    andonefordinner.
