Project Narrative
Need for the project
Now that we are incorporating common core standards in the classroom and also trying to use
more literacy in a math classroom the students will need to incorporate this into a project that
will help them later on in life. Many of the students dont have to time to look up information at
home or ask their parents for help. This project will give them availability to technology and an
abundance of resources that will assist them with life after high school. At Sierra Linda high
school our students are technologically savvy but lack their own personal devices. With this
project they will be able to look up information and use critical thinking skills to determine what
the best choice is when it comes to finding an affordable place to live and being able to make the
correct financial decisions.
Project Impact
This project will allow the students to see what life is like based on having a certain income.
With this information they will be able to determine what assets and or necessities they can
afford and what options would be best according to their income. The teachers will collaborate
so that the students will correctly cite their research and display the information correctly when
composing the final assignment. Others in the school will have an opportunity to see the students
go about inquiring about how life really is once you have your own responsibilities. Hopefully
by seeing the work and effort the students put into the project others will be inspired to come up
with a budget of their own. Around 190 students will be participating in this project all getting a
look into how life will be when they get a job and start using their own finances to purchase
necessities and wants in life.
Learning Goals and Outcomes
How much can you afford while working various jobs? This question will guide students
throughout their project while learning how to allocate their funds in order to maximize the
satisfaction they get from their work situation. Students will use technology to gather
information on costs and also use members of their family or community to help steer them in
the right directions and to get different ideas of what would be appropriate choices.
During the project the students will have to analyze the research materials and see how they will
relate to any costs they have incurred and will have to use critical thinking to be able to come up
with a final creative visual product of their findings and budget.
Standards that will be covered include:
Common Core
HS.MP.1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

Activities

Harris 3

Students will perform the following activities based off of the job they are given they will have
to create a budget.

Research different expenses according to desired lifestyle

o Housing/Utilities
o Car
o Phone
o Insurance
o Food
o Entertainment
o Emergencies
Complete an expense worksheet determining the fixed and variable expenses
Create a visual aide of the findings with a report detailing what it will be like living off of
a certain income and the challenges they may encounter when creating a budget to fit
their lifestyle. Did they have to go without some material things in order to pay for the
necessities? What career are they in? When writing the report the students will have to
incorporate the deciding factors on how they made their final decisions.

Assessment
While the students are participating within the project I will check the budget worksheets that
will be filled out. I will monitor the use of the technology to make sure they are being
responsible and respectful when using the technology. We will go over the rubric that will be
used so they know what they will be graded on. The final report and visual aid will be graded
according to the guidelines set out and explained to the students. Did they cite where they
obtained the information and are they credible sources, did any of their decisions impact others
and if so was it positive or negative.
Technology support
Mr. Delfino Del Bosque is the tech support technician for Sierra Linda High School and will
assist us if we need any help with the computers or iPads. He is very knowledgeable and readily
available.
Sustaining the Project after the Proposal Period
As a math department we will incorporate this project every year varying the jobs and income
that we use. This project will help all students and the technology that is granted will not only
assist in this project but it will be useful all year long. Different applications can downloaded on
the IPad to help with graphing and it can also be used to access Kahn Academy to see step-bystep videos on an array of math problems.
Innovation

When the students research information they will be able to use this in the future when they will
need to find housing or perhaps buy a car. This project will be a stepping stone for them to help
them get insight on what life is like when you are the one responsible for everything.
