Overview
Roman sculpture was originally styled after the Greek
Many examples of even the most famous Greek sculptures, such as the Apollo
Belvedere and Barberini Faun, are known only from Roman Imperial or Hellenistic
copies
Later developed to equestrian sculpture and portrait busts by the 20 th century BC

Equestrian sculpture
Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius, gilded bronze, c. 173-76 C.E. (Capitoline
Museums, Rome).
It was located near the Lateran Palace, until it was placed in the center of the
Piazza del Campidoglio in 1538 by Michelangelo.
Marcus Aurelius ruled ca. 161-180 C.E.
