What have I learnt about Conflict in my classes?

IDU Peace & Conflict

In this IDU unit about peace and conflict, I must say that I really widened my comprehension about the
history of conflict. Before I start, I have a quick suggestion to what else could have been included as part
of the curriculum. I would advise that students shall find out more about the building blocks of peace so
that hopefully as the new generation we will be able to construct a peaceful world. I find it crucial to
make note of this since I think that one cannot fight for peace without knowing its requirements.
On the contrary, I found this project very significant and wise as part of the curriculum. After all, I am
very knowledgeable about the second world war and the apartheid and also the Turkish conflict against
the terroristic group Pkk. Concerning all these unfortunate conflicts the most tragic one is by far the
second world war. As part of the Second World War the holocaust is something which shall never be
repeated in human faith. Moreover, humans in all generations should master their history to take lessons
from the past and build a better future as we are doing at least in our school. Considering my knowledge
about conflict, I realize that our world still faces unavoidable difficulty with education. In most nations
students learn about history the way their government wants it. Hence, they become brainwashed and
biased citizens in the future which makes the existence of wars inevitable. Therefore not all but the
majority of nations should enhance their educational system to raise unbiased citizens. A very good
example of this is Germany where in all schools it is a compulsory part of the curriculum to learn about
the holocaust. This will only do good for the future of humanity.
On behalf of the holocaust, I got a chance to view conflict from a more society based perspective as we
studied the apartheid. Even though I had some knowledge about it pre-hand, I now feel like an expert on
it. What is very significant to note about apartheid is the way a minority overruled the majority of society
in a country. As we know, the apartheid regime banned any citizen of black or colored descent from
voting. The reason to this was straight forward. If these people were to vote the white peoples party
(National Party of South Africa) was to lose the elections because their electorates were a minority
compared to the black people. Furthermore, using this knowledge we can make a link to the concerns we
have in our world today. As statistics will prove, in every country the immense gap between the poor and
the rich is continuously growing every day. Statistics by the U.N. suggest that 1% of the worlds
population own 75% of the wealth of the world whilst the 99% of the other people have the share to 25%
left. In my opinion, what triggers war out of all is hunger, even though political confrontations have major
influence on war, one will only start to actively fight when they suffer from hunger. As these numbers
stress out, if statistics wont alter a war in the next century or even decade will unfortunately be
inevitable.
To conclude, I must emphasize that his unit was one of the most influential units Ive ever done and I
proved to me that conflict can be very destructive and painful. Therefore as future generations we must
bring the world to a point where having conflict should become very rare. For this to happen the biggest
gift we have is education. Without education this piece of work wouldnt have been done!
