Importance of Science and Health for Children

The sad truth is that many elementary schools do not have a good science program.
Science should not be cut down or cut out completely because it is important. Science teaches
kids important life skills like problem solving, research, and making inferences. Dave Hone says,
Science teaches kids how to think, how to evaluate and judge, how to process information and
come to rules and conclusions about the world (1). With science, students get creative with
science because they are able to formulate their own ideas, test their idea, compare their ideas,
and choose how to present their ideas. Vast explains, A strong elementary school science
program also encourages childrens natural tendencies to explore and learn, and develops
language and mathematical skills through observations, manipulation and communication of data
and discoveries during lessons where various subject areas are integrated (1). Children should
experience science as part of their daily instruction.
Health is also important and should be incorporated into the daily curriculum of
elementary students. By doing so, children will become educated on health, how to keep
themselves healthy, and also to have a positive attitude about health. It is important for children
to become educated with their mental health, physical health, emotional health, and social health.
According New Hampshire Department of Health, It motivates students to improve and
maintain their health, prevent disease, and reduce risky behaviors (1). By increasing the
students positive attitudes about health, they themselves become healthier and healthy students
learn better. Furthermore, The New Hampshire Department of Health explains, One study
showed that reading and math scores of third and fourth grade students who received
comprehensive health education were significantly higher than those who did not (1). With

health incorporate into the daily curriculum schools can have healthier, more motivated, and
more successful students.
