Kambule

Farms

Introduction
The Kambule farm is a set of farms or farming activities situated within Mpika,
Muchinga Province of Zambia. Kambule farm is one of the strategic Business
units of the broader Kambule Group of companies. It became a reality in 2010
when an 8 hectare farm was procured for the purposes of undertaking farming
activities. The said farm is at Makumbi village, 7 kilometres south of Tazara
Township, near the Tazara railway station. The farm is semi developed with basic
structures in place that would enable farming activities to take place. With a
mature orange orchard, some fruit trees, a three bed-roomed house, a well and
well stamped land mass facing the Lwitikila River, the farm is strategically
located to generate cash. Despite being situated in a village, the farm holds
great potential for business
Uniqueness
As hinted at, the farm is strategically located on the banks of the Lwitikila river,
Mpikas largest water source with a potential for boating activities, fish or even
sugar cane farming. The already stamped land mass with a mature orchard
places the plot above and apart from the rest. Further, about 5 kilometres or less
away from the farm lies the Tazama Fuel deport which in itself is a ready market
for produce from the farm.
Location
The farm is located 7 kilometres south of Tazara Township where a sizeable
population resides. Though the paper work is yet to be completed that gives the
exact coordinates of the plot, it is sufficient to state that the farm is within
Makumbi Village and with land officially parcelled out by His Royal highness,
Senior Chief Chikwanda. The transformation into statute land is presently in
process.
Vision
An integrated and sustainable eco-friendly productive farming and recreation
model serving customers
Strategic Direction
The farm needs to develop from where it presently stands. Having set the basic
structures in place, the farm needs further investment to increase productivity,
privacy and increase revenue streams so that it more than breaks even. It is

hoped that by 2020, the farm will have been securely cordoned, fully functional
and attracting a steady stream of customers from within and without Mpika town.
Leadership
The leadership around this farming activity is led by Billy Sichone (until a right
Business farm Manager is hired). The farm needs a well seasoned Manager that
will foster eco-friendly farming systems and approaches to maximise the
available land. It has been rightly said that it is not the size but the maximizing
of what is at hand that matters in farming. We heartily agree with this noble idea.
Once fully functional, the leadership will look like this:
Board members
The board is still being constituted but the following are the suggested board
members (subject to their agreement):
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

Billy Sichone- Board Chair

Chikondi Phiri
Paul Simfukwe
Shone Mambwe Specialist-Farm Management

Operational leadership
The operational team will run the daily functions of the farm, generate reports
and accountable to the Board of directors, who themselves will offer strategic
technical advice as the case may be.

Security
Status of farm (as of 2015)
At the moment, the farm has scored some successes though much still remains
to be done and achieved. To date, the following are in place:
1. A three bed-roomed house that still needs some major rehabilitations
though re-roofing was done in 2014.
2. A functional water well that offers water through-out the year.
3. A well developed and mature orange orchard with over 20 trees. These
trees still need pruning to increase productivity
4. Guava, Paw-paw and Banana trees exist but need attention.
5. The plot borders have been determined and approved by the
Chief/headman but need to be officially beaconed and surveyed.

6. Some key markers have been identified as to where the land mass exactly
reaches but the title acquisition process is most key to secure the
boundaries.
Plans into the future
The farm hopes to develop into a fully-fledged integrated farming hive of activity
that will harbour the following in one plot:
1. Boating & Fish farming
2. Renovate and expand existing living quarters such as build in-house toilet,
kitchen, painting, glass panes replacement, landscaping among others.
3. Sugar cane planting and expansion
4. Expanded citrus plantation-Oranges, lemon, Guava and Banana
5. Small livestock-Goats, Doves, chickens, guinea fowls etc.
6. Bamboo mini-plantation (one lima)
7. Palm trees set up for decorative purposes
8. Timber trees (soft and hardwood) along the farm edges plus one half lima
growth section
9. Dog Breeding for security and commercial purposes. At a later stage, cats
would be a good addition.
10.Bee Keeping
11.Build a warehouse to store materials, tools or Produce
12.Develop solar power capacity to the site
13.Cordoning/fencing off the entire farm from external intruders.
14.Secure supporters/funders/partners to co finance the farming activities
here planned.
