NORWAY HISTORY

TIMELINE

11,000-8,000 BC
Earliest inhabitants arrived in Norway.
These people were known as the Komsa.
They were hunters and fisherman.
Evidence of their existence is displayed in rock
carvings.

7,000 BC
This time period was considered the Stone Age and new
immigrants arrived in Norway during this time.
Individuals came from the central Europe area.
These people brought over agriculture and livestock.
The country became habitable because rising
temperatures from the last ice age.
The first Norwegians lived off of fishing and hunting deer,
seal, and elk.

600 AD
Permanent communities were being established
along the coast of Norway.
Sami people began to settle along the Finnmark
Plateau in the northern part of the country.

THE 9 T H CENTURY
The Vikings from Norway raided Scotland, Ireland,
England, France, and Spain.
Norway was divided into several kingdoms and Harald
Fairhair deemed himself the king of Norway.
In 995-1000 the king, Olaf, converted the inland areas to
Christianity.
In 1030 AD Christianity was completely adopted in
Norway.

THE MIDDLE AGES


1130 marked the start of the Middle Ages and population growth in

Norway
In 1319 Norway was united with Sweden temporarily.
1349-1350 the black death was prominent in Norway and killed

half of the population.


These kingdoms were united until 1355.
In the 14th century Norway combined with Sweden and Denmark

under a single monarch. This union occurred in Kalmar, Sweden.


In 1523 Sweden broke away from Demark, but Norway remained

with it until 1814.

1500-1800
In the 1530s Reformation occurred and the Norwegians accepted the
Lutheran doctrines.
1523 Sweden departed from the Kalmar Union and Denmark and
Norway continued to see conflict.
1536 Norway became a Danish province instead of an independent
kingdom.
In the 17th century Norwegian towns grew. They exported fish, timber,
iron, and copper. They merchant navy also grew larger.
In 1769 Norway had a population of 728,000 people.
In the 18th century the majority of Norwegians were famers and fishers.

THE 19 T H CENTURY
In 1813 Sweden invaded Denmark and Denmark was forced to
hand Norway over to Sweden.
1814 the Peace Treaty of Kiel lead to the end of the Napoleonic
Wars.
A constitution was implemented in 1814
In the 19th century Norwegian population and agriculture grew
immensely.
At the end of the 19th century many Norwegians emigrated to
the US
In 1884 Norway decided to impeach their entire government.

THE 20 T H CENTURY
On August 13, 1905 the Norwegian people voted in a referendum and approved
of the independence of Norway.
1905 Prince Carl of Denmark was crowned king Haakon VII.
The Norwegians decided to have a monarchy.
In 1907 women were given the right to vote in local elections and in 1913 the
were given the right to vote in national elections.
During the First and Second World War Norway remained neutral. However in
the WWII Germany captured Norway.
1940 Nazis attacked Norways ports and Norway attempted to resist. Vidkun
Quisling proclaimed himself the head of the government of Norway after the
Royal family fled to Britain.
1949 Norway joined NATO.
