Learning Methods Summary

Of the many methods presented, 5 stood out to me because I either use them
now, or would like to better incorporate them into my teaching. My 5 methods are:

Gardners Multiple Intelligences

Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)

Contextualized Language Learning

Standards (5 Cs)

Gardners Multiple Intelligences speaks to me because when thinking about

K-12 teaching, teachers not only teach subject matters, but also teaches students to
develop awareness of them selves. Teachers can model different learning
techniques in their lessons so that students can later modify their learning to fit
their style of learning. Students feel a sense of pride when they are able to use their
innate learning style to complete a project, making it more relevant. MI also teaches
students to recognize and accept each others unique learning styles, which is one
way of practicing appreciation of differences in the world outside the classroom.

Learning Methods Summary

Neuro-linguistic Programming has been used effectively in counseling and

treatment plans and uses 4 modalities/learning styles visual, audio, kinesthetic,
and tactile (think Anthony Robbins). NLP engages the senses, creating stronger
neural ties to that experience. When making a lesson plan, including activities that
touch on these 4 learning modalities is an easy way for me to ensure that students
are accessing/connecting to the lesson. I like to have an element of fun in
everything I do, and creating lessons that appeal to the senses is sure to be fun for
students as well. Last of all, lessons presented with NLP in mind may help the
population of students with sensory-needs and possibly even those with
ADD/ADHD.
Content and Language Integrated Learning strikes a balance between
immersing students in L2 via subject matter but also allows for direct instruction of
the language structures and culture. In addition, this method supports teaching
content based on student interests/purposes, making the learning more relevant to
them. Learners can immerse themselves in themes and learn above and beyond
simple vocabulary. This method includes many other modern teaching concepts
such as Scaffolding and Contextualized Language Learning.
Contextualized Language Learning (CLL) involves concepts that remind
teachers to make learning interesting and relative to students lives. When students
are engaged in learning something that is relevant to them, their motivation for
learning the subject increases and therefore their ability to recall and develop a
richer language discourse about the subject is increased.

Learning Methods Summary

Teaching from standards (5 Cs) ensures that students receive quality

instruction that will remain with them throughout the years. The 5 Cs of
communication, culture, connections, comparisons, and communities develops the
whole person and increases critical thinking that will help students to succeed in the
world. Some may complain that is complicated and hard to achieve 5 in every
lesson, but I actually enjoy the challenge as well as satisfaction knowing that I have
given students more knowledge that goes beyond my subject matter.
In summary, it looks like I chose methods that were created after the 1970s
when student-centered methods developed. I look back in to my K-12 education
and wonder why I did not see or experience these methods myself. This also leads
me to wonder what the typical teacher education programs have taught over the
years. Not knowing other methods could negatively impact their professional
careers with the new mandates that tenure and teacher salary be attached to
student test scores. I am glad to have identified the teaching methods I prefer and
the reasons why.
