Toolkit for Teachers as Modern Learners

Assignment:
1.) As a group discuss the purpose, strengths, and weaknesses of the tool as intended for the
use of elementary, middle, and high school students.
2.) Use a group wiki to post/integrate the results of the discussion in order to produce a wiki
that address the points discussed.
3.) Write a document that address the following:

In what ways did the wiki facilitate/inhibit how your assigned tool was
reported and studied?
In what ways could you see a wiki being used to facilitate student learning?
In what ways does the tool your group investigated align with the ISTE
standards for teachers?
In what ways does the tool align with the ISTE standards for students?
Do your suggested activities/examples of the use of this tool align with the
ISTE standards?
Why or why not?

Response:
The wiki in this project facilitated collaboration and communication by making the
information accessible to all individuals in my group. Instead of having to copy the information
or writing it entirely by hand it was posted by one individual in our group. The use of a wiki
eliminates a paper over load and the possibility of misplacing important information. An added
feature of this wiki is the fact that others can edit the original information and others will be able
to see the updates immediately. The only hindrance I can think of is the possibility that other
individuals may erase the information posted by others.
In a similar fashion wikis could be used by students to facilitate learning. The advantage
of this tool is that it could be used in a variety of subjects and topics. Students in a science class
could use this to report data while students in a history class can use it to discuss a topic.
Furthermore, because of the advancements of technology and the increase of student access to
these tools students could use this wiki to collaborate with students from other school districts,
states, or countries. This simple tool could bring about a large collaborative network of students
who have the power to write, edit, and share knowledge.
In my Educational Technology class various groups were assigned a technology tool to
investigate and my group was assigned Twitter. Twitter can be used in a variety of methods to
align with the International Society for Technology in Education Standards for Teachers (ISTET). Twitter could be used to meet standards such as Standard 1b: Engage students in exploring
real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources. An example
of this would be to use Twitter as a news feed application, by following news sources such as
CNN or FOX both teachers and students will receive live updates of real-world news and issues.
Teachers could then use this information to discuss real-world issues and prepare activities for
students to practice problem solving skills. Likewise, Twitter can also align with the ISTE
standards for students and an example of this would be Standard 2b: Communicate information
and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats. Students could

use Twitter as a means to share media such as photos, videos, links and they also have the ability
to share a few words of their own with a large audience. Twitter can be used as a tool to help
teachers and students meet the ISTE standards.
My group also identified activities and examples of how Twitter aligns with the ISTE
standards and an example is Standard 3c: Communicate relevant information and ideas
effectively for students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats. My
group recognized the power of communication that Twitter offered and we noted that it could be
used to provide information to parents about class activities or other important school
announcements. Another example we noted is the ability to use Twitter as a message board for
students to ask questions or to share information. This use of Twitter aligns with Standard 2a:
Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital
environments and media. As a group we produced a list of examples and activities of how
Twitter could be used by teachers and students in a manner that aligns with the ISTE Standards.
Lastly, the majority of our list includes examples of communication via social media and Twitter
could be used as a means to teach students about digital etiquette and responsible social
interactions as indicated by Standard 4c of the ISTE-T.
