Professional Growth Plan

During the first year of teaching, I hope to establish myself as a skilled member of the school
faculty. My lessons and classroom management should serve as proof that I am a capable and qualified
teacher, and my experience as a leader will lend me credibility as I develop relationships among staff who
have been teaching for many years. As my first year progresses, I will have the opportunity to take note
of lessons and unit pacing that work especially well or that are particularly ineffective; these observations
will help me to adjust my techniques during subsequent years.
Although my subject matter concentration is Political Science, I am currently completing
certifications for other subjects as well (Health, History, Mathematics, and English), and it is my hope
that these will increase my marketability as I search for teaching opportunities. I am passionate about all
of these subjects, so I would love to be given the opportunity to teach one or all of them throughout my
career. Among these subjects, I am particularly interested in teaching Government, Health/Sexual
Education, Algebra, and/or Creative Writing.
Over the course of the next five years, I hope to strengthen the relationships and report with other
teachers at the school/district where I teach. I also hope to develop a much more thorough understanding
of the standards (particularly in relation to standardized tests) that my students are beholden to. This will
enable me to teach in a way that encourages their success on such tests as well as allow me to allot time
for teaching additional content and skills. By the time that Ive been teaching for five years, I should have
a reliable set of lessons for my curriculum that not only teach content but that also develop the ability to
apply knowledge through critical thinking. I am also very interested in starting or joining an after school
club that provides time, space, and mentorship for students who want to develop their reading and writing
skills. This will also give me valuable insight into the many styles of reading/writing strengths, which
will help me as I pursue a personal goal of publishing my first novel.
I am very interested in joining the International Literacy Association. This organization provides
individuals with tools and resources needed to teach others how to read and write, or to develop their
reading/writing abilities. Involvement in an organization like speaks to me on a personal level because of
the influence that books and writing have had in my own life.
