How This Lesson Fits:
This lesson is the beginning of Chapter 10 in my Psychology Class. This
fits into my overall unit over conditioning and learning. Students have
already learned about the different types of conditioning and learning.
Chapter 10 takes them into how learning then helps store information
into the brain. This unit takes about 2 weeks of class and this lesson
falls on day 6 of the unit.

Procedures:
1. Students will do the memorization of the first list. They will have
20 seconds to look at the list and then it will be taken away. They
need to write down as many of the things on the list that they
can remember.
2. Students will download the Chapter 10 Power-point notes from
Canvas.
3. Students will hear a short lecture over the processes of memory
and the types of memory.
4. Within the lecture students will do two different types of
experiments. The first will be to organize the class into groups of
5. The experimenter reads aloud a list of 10 2-digit numbers.
After a 3 second pause, the experimenter asks the first student
to write down the numbers. After 5 seconds, the second students
will write down the numbers. After 15 seconds, the third student

will write down the numbers. After the 30 seconds, the last
students will write down the numbers. Students will then graph
their results recording time along the x-axis and items correct
recalled on the y-axis.
5. Students will in the second experiment be given a list of topics
and given 2 minutes to memorize them. After that 2 minutes is
up students will continue to be given a lecture. Students will also
be given their ticket out the door to complete. At the end of the
ticket out the door, students will be asked to write down
everything they remember from the list.
6. Students will get into groups of 3 and get an iPad. Each iPad will
have the Memory Matches game downloaded on to it. The app
can be found at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/memorymatches/id380007120?mt=8
The class will need 10 iPads to complete this activity. Each group
will need to play 3 games of Memory Matches.
7. Students will finish the lesson with a ticket out the door of
reading a case study about H.M. that discusses the importance of
the hippocampus and memory as well as answer questions about
the Memory Matches game went and how activities like this
can help with our memory in other aspects of life.
