3.2.3.A4: Use basic reactions to demonstrate

observable changes in properties of matter.
1.6.3.A: Listen critically and respond to others in small
and large group situations. Respond with grade level
appropriate questions, ideas, information, or opinions.
9.1.3.E: Demonstrate the ability to define objects,
express emotions, illustrate an action or relate an
experience through creation of works in the arts.
During the chemical reaction experiment of the dancing
popcorn, the 3rd grade student will be able to define
and discuss key reaction terms in large and small
groups.
During the chemical reaction experiment of the dancing
popcorn, the 3rd grade student will be able to listen, add
ideas, and ask questions in small and large groups.
While acting out the dancing popcorn reaction, the 3rd
grade student will be able to correctly create the
chemical reaction that was just observed into a skit in
small groups.
I will ask students to define chemical reaction, dissolve,
and mixture in their own words.
I will walk around to observe and question students
during the experiment.
I will see each groups representation of the chemical
reaction.
I will collect the Chemical Reactions worksheet for an
informal formative assessment.
1.a: Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas,
products, or processes
1.b: Create original works as a means of personal or
group expression
2.d: Contribute to project teams to produce original
works or solve problems
3.d: Process data and report results

I will have the student who is visually impaired allowed
to look at the chemical reaction in the cup by putting it
on the table and close to their eyes.
Student who is visually impaired will be able to discuss
their answers instead of writing them down on the
sheet.

Activating Prior Knowledge
Do you remember last week how we talked about
chemical reactions? In your own words, please write
down the definition of a chemical reaction. A chemical
reaction is a process where one or more substances are
changed into others.
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
What are some examples of chemical reactions that
youve seen that you can tell me about?
Big Idea Statement
Chemical reactions occur between substances in nature.
Essential Questions Statement
What does a chemical reaction look like?
Objective Statement
The 3rd grade student will be able to define key terms in
large and small groups four out of five times.
The 3rd grade student will be able to individually read,
comprehend, and follow directions given four out of five
times.
The 3rd grade student will be able to demonstrate a
chemical reaction in small groups four out of five times.
Key Vocabulary
Chemical reaction, dissolve, mixture
Modeling of the Concept
Today we are going to create our own chemical reaction,
but before we do that I will read you the directions that
are on the sheet provided.
You will find a cup of water, baking soda, vinegar,
popcorn kernels, and a spoon. Please do not touch any
of these ingredients until Im done with the instructions.
You will take the baking soda and pour this into the
water first. Someone will need to mix the baking soda
until it is completely dissolved. What does dissolve

mean? Dissolving is the act of one solid becoming part

of a liquid Write down an example of something else we
dissolve into water.
Then, pour your popcorn kernels into the water and
baking soda mixture. Does anyone know what a mixture
is? A mixture is something that contains more than one
type of element or compound. Please write down what
our mixture is made up of.
Finally, pour the vinegar into the mixture of popcorn,
baking soda, and water.
Please write down your observations as the chemical
reaction takes place.
Guiding the Practice
You may get started! I will be moving around the room to
answer any questions.
Providing the Independent Practice
Students will follow the directions on the worksheet and
perform their chemical reaction.
Students will write down their observations.
Transition
Teacher will ask, Has everyone finished writing their
observations? If yes, move on to the next part.
Guiding the Practice
If you have a blue star on your paper, you are the
popcorn. If you have a green star on your paper, you are
bubbles. If you have an orange star on your paper, you
are the liquid. Talk within your groups for one minute to
act out your chemical reaction. Please keep your hands
to yourselves. Make sure that I see your demonstration,
and then you can sit back down at your tables.
Transition
Teacher will say, Start demonstrating your reactions!
when one minute is up.
Providing the Independent Practice
Students will work in small groups to demonstrate their
chemical reaction.
Transition
Teacher will say, Times up! when its time to start
discussing observations, and after students are finished
with their demonstrations.

Self-reflection

Ask students questions about key terms and their

Move around the room to see that students are on task
and comprehending the material.
Demonstration of chemical reaction
Summary & Review of the Learning
Can you share some of your observations?
Why do you think the popcorn kernels are moving up
and down?
How could we change this experiment make the popcorn
kernels to move faster?
Have one person in your group collect the Chemical
Reactions worksheet from every student and give them
to me.
Homework/Assignments
Please show your parents how to make a chemical
reaction at home! If you dont have these ingredients at
home, let me know. Make sure to explain the new words
that you learned today!
