Activity Design Plan
Activity Objective
The student will comprehend the layers of the earth and its properties by reviewing questions and
answering them for prizes.
Description of Activity
The students will demonstrate their knowledge of the layers of the earth by reviewing with an in
class activity. The game Who Knows the Answer?! was created to provide an interesting and
entertaining way to review the different layers of the Earth and its properties. In this activity the
students will take turns stepping up to the front of the class to answer different trivia questions.
The student who buzzes in first and gives the right answer will get a piece of candy for a
reward. This activity will recall previous learning and connect the learning in a meaningful way.
Motivation
The extrinsic motivation will be that the students will receive Jolly Ranchers for every correct
answer.
The students will be intrinsically motivated because they will want to get good grades on the test
scheduled for this Friday.
Directions
1. Two names will be drawn randomly using popsicle sticks
2. The two students called will come up to the podium and place each of their hands on the
buzzers in front of them.
3. The questions will be displayed on a PowerPoint and read by the teacher.
4. No answer will be taken before the question is completely read.
5. Once you ring you have 15 seconds to answer the question
6. You may not ask anyone for help or receive help by gestures given from the audience.
7. Once the question is answered, if the response is correct then the student may choose one
Jolly Rancher from my snack bag and then both students will return to their seats.
8. Once the question is answered, if the response is incorrect the other student will have 15
seconds to answer, again you may not ask anyone for help.
9. If a member of the audience shouts out the answer then the question is dead.
10. If both students give an incorrect answer then I will call on an investigator from the
audience to answer the question.
Understanding of the directions will be checked by drawing popsicle sticks and asking the
students to answer the following set of questions:
How will the students names be chosen?
What will the students do once they reach the podium?

When may you ring the buzzer?

How long do students get to answer the question?
Are students allowed to ask for help from the audience when answering their questions?
What happens if the answer is incorrect?
What happens if the answer is correct?
What happens if someone shouts out the correct answer?
Can someone please summarize the entire activity for the class?
Active Participation
Every student will be involved because the teacher will randomly select students by using
Popsicle sticks. The students will be expected to be actively participating and listening so they
will hear the question and be prepared to answer the question if both students at the podium miss
the answer.
On-task behavior will be maximized by the use of a timer. The timer will give the students a
sense of urgency and will make sure that the entire class is actively focused on the task on hand.
Using Popsicle sticks to select names randomly means that every student will have to be paying
attention if they want to have a chance at winning the candy.
Transitioning times will be maximized by sticking to the time guidelines identified in the
directions.
Expectations of Students Behavior
Students will be respectful of the students up at the podium by remaining quiet while the
question is being read and answers are being contemplated. Audience members will be allowed
to cheer for any correct answer given but must stop when the attention getting signal one-twothree, eyes on me is called out by the teacher. Any answer that is shouted out will result in the
question being dead. Movement will be smooth and fluid. When the students are drawn to stand
at the podium, they will smoothly stand up and take their positions in the front of the class. The
winner of each round will come to me and pick out a Jolly Rancher from my snack bag. The
other student will return to their seat. If the audience answers a question that has not been
answered by either of the students at the podium correctly the student will come get a Jolly
Rancher from me and return to their seat.

Modeling
A practice round will be played with two students randomly chosen from the audience using
popsicle sticks. During practice round each step will be labeled as they go through the process of

playing the game. Once the correct performance is both shown and the criteria labeled and any
steps are clarified, the game will begin.
This game was inspired from the game that Professor Pirrone showed us in class.
