Texas Principal Competency

Reflection

Stefanie Peterson Tellier

Competency 01: The principal knows how to shape

campus culture by facilitating the development,
articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a
vision of learning that is shared and supported by the
school community.

During my internship, I was able to serve on

the Legacy of Faith team which is our Capital
Campaign. It is all about building the future of
our community and eventually, building a new
school.
I would like to be able to participate more in
furthering our campus vision through the role
as Assistant Principal.

Competency 02: The principal knows how to communicate and

collaborate with all members of the school community, respond
to diverse interests and needs, and mobilize resources to
promote student success.

During my internship, I was called upon to

lead several faculty meetings, team meeting,
assemblies, and community meetings. I have
been able to communicate effectively in all
capacities.
However, I would like to improve my
collaboration skills with other members of the
faculty in order to respond diverse interests
and needs.

Competency 03: The principal knows how to act with integrity,

fairness, and in an ethical and legal manner.

During my internship, I was able to practice

this competency within my role as Team Lead
by mediating situations for staff members.
Ive also been able to help implement new
policies.

I would like to gain more experience within

this competency by becoming more involved
with Diocesan policies and procedures.

Competency 04: The principal knows how to facilitate the design

and implementation of curricula and strategic plans that enhance
teaching and learning; ensure alignment of curriculum,
instruction, resources, and assessment; and promote the use of
varied assessments to measure student performance.

During my internship, I did not gain very much

experience in this competency.
I have had some experience with varied
assessments, but not in an administrative role.
However throughout the rest of this school
year, we are preparing for accreditation so I
am going to be exposed to more of the details
in this competency.

Competency 05: The principal knows how to advocate, nurture,

and sustain an instructional program and a campus culture that
are conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.

In my role as Team Lead, I have gained some

experience with staff professional growth and
mentorship of teachers and staff.
For one of my projects, I even redesigned our
Team Leader Roles.
I still feel the need to gain more familiarity
with cultivating an instructional program for
students.

Competency 06: The principal knows how to implement a staff

evaluation and development system to improve the performance
of all staff members, select and implement appropriate models
for supervision and staff development, and apply the legal
requirements for personnel management.

During my internship, I was able to participate in

the planning process of several staff
development events.
As Team Lead, I implemented a new informal
process for Team Leaders to assess and report
their teachers.
I would like to be more involved with summative
and formative evaluations on my campus.

Competency 07: The principal knows how to apply organizational,

decision-making, and problem-solving skills to ensure an
effective learning environment.

In my internship role, I was able to creatively solve

problems, such as How to fix our over-crowded
events?. It was difficult, though, to try to find a
conclusion that pleased everyone. Although my
supervisor and I agreed that I devised the best
plan for the school, there were still faculty
members that were unhappy with the resolution.
I would greatly benefit from more decision-making
experiences.

Competency 08: The principal knows how to apply principles of

effective leadership and management in relation to campus
budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial management,
and technology use.

This is the competency I gained the more

experience with during my internship by
taking over Account Payables. I have also
assisted with hiring, purchasing decisions,
managing and planning of the budget.
We are currently in the process of budgeting
for next year and the involvement has been
fascinating and extremely beneficial as
administrator knowledge.

Competency 09: The principal knows how to apply principles of

leadership and management to the campus physical plant and
support systems to ensure a safe and effective learning
environment.

Prior to and during my internship, I serve on

our campus Building and Maintenance
Committee. This group has enlightened me to
the multitude of behind-the-scenes and
extremely involved tasks that are required to
keep the physical school functioning.
Our committees main priority is always the
safety of the students. Keeping the campus
safe for them requires a great amount of
upkeep and vigilance.

Internship 1 Reflection

Compared to my original reflection from Internship 1, I

have grown immensely in my administration experience
and knowledge.
In the first reflection, I focused on Competencies 3 and 7.
Throughout this last semester, I did not feel I gained as
much experience in those specific areas, but grew in
other areas instead.
Overall, I feel like the combination of my two internship
semesters have been a nice combination of a variety of
experiences.
