Daily Topic: Science Where are the Oceans?

Objective: The learner will label the continents and oceans of Earth, using KidPix (ESSEA-2)
Time allotted: 1 hour
Prior knowledge required: Land masses and continent names, map keys
Procedures:
1. The teacher will ask students to estimate the size of the oceans on earth by
asking questions and using Google Earth to compare sizes.
a. Which is larger, LSU Lakes or Baton Rouge?
b. Which is larger, Louisiana or the Gulf of Mexico?

a. Ocean The ocean is the mass of salt water that covers about 72 percent of the
earths surface. Oceanic divisions are known by specific names such as the
Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, and the Indian Ocean. 72 percent is about
of the earth.
b. Arctic Ocean The Artic Ocean surrounds the North Pole. It is the worlds
smallest ocean and is mostly covered by solid ice, ice floes, and icebergs.

extends from the Arctic Ocean to Antarctica. It is east of North and South
America and west of Europe and Africa.
d. Indian Ocean The Indian Ocean, the third largest ocean in the world, lies
between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. It is south of Asia, east of Africa,
and west of Australia.

f.

Pacific Ocean The Pacific is the largest ocean in the world, extending from the
Arctic Ocean to Antarctica. It is west of North and South America and east of
Asia and Australia.

g. - fraction indicating that something is 3 parts of a whole that has 4 parts

3. Teacher will explain that the ocean boundaries are manmade ideas. They are
connected and do not always a land mass to separate each ocean.
4. Students will label continents and oceans on a world map, using KidPix. (Teacher has
pre-loaded the template.) Instructions and example will be displayed on the Smart
Board.
Student Instructions:

4. Student Ipads with KidPix program and world template pre-loaded on KidPix
6. Word document to display with student instructions, blank template and
completed example.
Accommodations:
1. Special needs: Students with special needs will be given extended time to
complete the assignment. All labels are spelled on the Smart Board. Shorten
assignment to only labeling oceans, if creating map key becomes
complex/frustrating.
2. Non-native: Completed example provided and all labels are spelled on the
Smart Board.
3. Gifted: Gifted students will identify the equator and draw a compass rose on
the world map, in addition to the given assignment instructions. They will
have the option to free hand draw the world map when completed.
