Identify, analyze, and interpret primary and secondary sources to make
generalizations about events and life in world history. (WHII.1a)
Use maps, globes, artifacts, and pictures to analyze the physical and cultural

Rationale:
WHII.7d is important for students to know so they can understand how foreign
events influence American policies.
Objectives:
TSWBAT describe the reasons for issuing the Monroe Doctrine.
TSWBAT explain the terms within the Monroe Doctrine.
Lesson Opening:
1. Who is credited with liberating much of South America? 2. Which five countries
gained independence during the 1800s? 3. What is the order of the social hierarchy
in Latin America? 4. Which country speaks Portuguese? 5. Which European leader
was responsible for fighting the Haitians and taking over Portugal?
Connection:
Students will use knowledge about the Latin American revolutions and American
colonization to understand why the United States wants to keep Europe out of the
Americas.
Instructional Strategies/Processes:
1. Students will begin with a warmup. 1. Who is credited with liberating much of
South America? 2. Which five countries gained independence during the
1800s? 3. What is the order of the social hierarchy in Latin America? 4. Which
country speaks Portuguese? 5. Which European leader was responsible for
fighting the Haitians and taking over Portugal? (5 mins.)

2. The class will go over a brief PowerPoint Monroe Doctrine and follow along
on their guided notes/web (Monroe Doctrine.) (7 mins.)
3. The class will go over the Political Cartoons document. The first couple will
be done as a class and the last couple will be done as partners. (15 mins.)
4. The last half of class will be spent reviewing for their quiz. (16 mins.)
5. Answering any last minute questions. (2 mins.)

Assessment:
Students will be receive a summative assessment on Friday in the form of a quiz.
They will also be formatively assessed based on their answers during the warm up
and political cartoons.

Answering any last minute questions.
Homework:
Study for WHII.7 quiz on Friday.
Differentiation:
Students will have the opportunity to follow along with guided notes that force them
to think beyond copying the PowerPoints. Students will be able to work as partners
to analyze the political cartoons. Also, the review sheet will help smooth out any
confusion about the content.
