Para Professional Plan

Materials:

Pencil and paper to use for the exit slip. Personal white boards, white board markers,
erasers. Tiny paper with the strategy steps written on it (for the student to glue in his
notebook).

Setting/time:
The lesson takes place Tuesday, 10/15, from 9:45am-10:10am. The lesson will take place
in the resource room classroom.
Procedures/Instructional strategies:
Signal for Attention: Count down from 5.
Behavior Expectations: Raise your hand, listen actively, and use materials correctly.
Student-friendly learning target: Students will read aloud and write down the learning
target: Today I will solve three digit times two digit multiplication problems without
carrying.
Demonstration:
Tell students the steps of the strategy for solving a three-digit times two-digit
multiplication problem.
o Steps:
o Multiply the ones.
o Write your answer below the ones spot.
o Place holder.
o Multiply the tens.
o Write the number below the tens spot.
o Repeat steps 1-5 with the tens in the second factor.
o Add the two numbers together.
Ask students to read steps aloud.
Then, think aloud while solving 123 x 12 (pointing out the steps as you solve).
o Emphasize the order in which the digits are multiplied while explaining.
o Students should be following along by writing the problem and performing the
steps with you on their personal white boards.
Guided Practice:
Have students tell you the steps as you walk through solving 322 x 33.
o Let student tell you what to do next.
o Do one more together: 314 x 11

o Students should be following along by writing the problem and performing the
steps with you on their personal white boards.
Independent Practice:

Give students the following worksheet for independent practice.

o Students will solve each problem with a pencil.

Lesson Closing:

Have students read or explain the target for the lesson.

Have student explain an important step in solving multi-digit multiplication problems.
Have student solve one last problem on a piece of paper and give it to you as an exit slip.

Extension/Reteach:
For extensions: give students more problems or extend into giving them problems with
carrying.
For reteaches: Take a specific problem without carrying and walk through each step oneon-one with the student.
Lesson/activity objective:
Objective: When given 4 three digit times two digit multiplication problems without
carrying, students will correctly solve the problems with 100% accuracy on two
consecutive tries.
Student friendly objective: Today I will solve three digit times two digit multiplication
problems without carrying.
Assessment:
Give the student the independent practice worksheet. While the student is solving the
independent practice problems, use the data sheet (included on a following page) to check
off if the student used every step. For instance, if the student is solving problem 1, and
there are 5 steps, as you watch the student perform the steps, check off the step they are
performing.
An example independent worksheet and data collection form are included at the end of
the document.
