Pre-Assessment of Students
Ask students what a simile and metaphor is and how do
they identify them.
Modeling of the Concept
Throughout video, pause after each song clip to allow
students to answer whether the lyric was a simile or
metaphor.
After video, explain to students they will be making their
own similes and metaphors through a color poem. (Pass
out color poem worksheet)
Explain to students with a partner, they will fill out the
worksheet in order to make a color poem. The poem
requires the use of similes and metaphors.
Tell students when they are finished with their poem,
practice reciting the words. When everyone is finished,
they will present their poem. When each group
presents, the group much recite with feeling in their
words. (Not monotone) (Model example for students with
example on sheet) One student may read the poem,
while another acts out the words, or develop other ways
to show the words. (Pictures)
Students will then be paired up with partner to get
started and may scatter throughout the room.
After 15 minutes, class will join back together to present
poems.

Homework/Assignments
None
Overall, the lesson went well. The students were able to get
descriptive language through the use of similes and
metaphors. However, I did a poor job explaining how to use
these in their writing. I felt I could have done a better job
explaining this by taking the time to do so and showing some
examples in forms of text. Also, some students seemed
confused on the directions on the poem, so more explanation
was needed for this as well. Overall, the lesson went well with
positive feedback from all students.
