A Quaker by the name of John Fairfield became a famous conductor. He would pretend to
be a slave owner himself and provide the slaves a way to get to a free state. A man named John
Rankin also wanted to help slaves escape. He bought a house on the Ohio River. Every night, John
Rankin raised a lantern to the top of a pole in his front yard. The lantern showed them the way to the
river. Slaves could stop there and get food, shelter, and clothing before heading off again. Some
plantation owners came across the river and attacked his house. But that did not stop Rankin. He
continued to help Runaways until slavery was finally outlawed.
The Underground Railroad was a secret, no records were kept. Even today, we don't know
exactly how the Underground Railroad operated. We do know networks were set up in Illinois,
Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and the states in New England.
We also know slaves often picked winter, around Christmas, to escape. They had time off for
the holiday. So it might take several days before they were missed. Also, in winter the Ohio River
would be frozen and easier to cross. Slaves found secret ways to let their friends know of their plans
to escape. They often would sing while they worked. When slaves ran away they took nothing with
them. Most slaves did not know how to read.
Since the slaves were always on the run they spent most of their time hiding. They survived
on very little sleep and food. The worst part was the fear of being caught.
Runaway slave were hunted down and often captured. For slaves that managed to get further
away, plantation owners might hire a slave catcher. These men earned money by capturing escaped
slaves and returning them.
If caught, an escaped slave would be severely punished. One form of punishment was to be
put in the pillory. A pillory is a big piece of timber with a hole for the head and arms. Despite the
many dangers for cargo, slaves, and conductors; as many as 2,500 slaves a year road The
Underground Road to freedom.
