Curriculum Title: __1.1 ________

Utah State Standard: Addition and Subtraction and the relations between them
Objective (s): Learn to do basic addition and subtraction
Materials: Black Paper Plate, White String, and a Visible Writing Utensil
Background for Teachers:
Once the students have an understanding of how to do basic addition and
subtraction, apply this game to assist their practice.
Intended Learning Outcomes: (same as objectives)
To learn basic addition and subtraction
Instructional Procedures:
Hole punch or slit the side of the plate all along the side, and put math equations
along the inside in a sparatic manner. Match the equations to the answers in a
crisscross manner, in order to make the plate appear as a web.
Family Connections: (take home activity)
Students can take home the activity to continue practicing their math skills
Assessment Plan: (how do you plan to assess whether or not students gained the
skill/concept?)
When the students can read and understand the operations of the equations

Lesson Plan and Reflection

Page 2

For my lesson plan I created a spider web for each individual student using a black paper
plate, white string, a silver marker, and a pair of scissors. It took me three hours just to make a
set of twenty five webs, and Im hoping it will be worth the effort. In my first grade classroom,
they are learning basic addition and subtraction. I noticed that the students understand how to
accomplish the equations, but arent exactly accomplished so easily. So I made addition and
subtraction equations in silver sharpie around a black paper plate followed by the answers that
the students have to match together. By the time the assignment is complete it should resemble a
spider web for Halloween. I had the idea that since its October and they are learning math that
they might enjoy it more if it was made fun.
When creating my lesson plan I wanted to make it fun so that the students would be more
involved in the assignment. I made the assignment out of materials that the students could reuse
and take home, but it became very time consuming in the prep time. It wasnt a very expensive
project, but I do understand why teachers say being creative isnt cheap. However, I wanted to
take on a more creative, and in a sense, unique type of way rather than copy a book or a website.
Not that they didnt have any good ideas, but I thought making my own would be more
rewarding.
I really liked making my lesson plan because I know I can do it again in other classes.
Depending on the age the math can change, but the concept is still fun and very involving. I have
noticed that students tend to be more willing to do an assignment when it is more hands on then
just writing down the answers. I just hope that my class of first graders is as accepting to my
lesson as the teacher was. I havent presented it yet, but I did have it approved by the teacher
herself. When I came to her worried about presenting a difficult or assignment she said to me, If
it works, great. If it doesnt, welcome to teaching!
