During this lesson, which is focused on beginning yoga poses, students will be learning how
to identify several benefits of using yoga as a way to increase flexibility for a healthy active
life.

enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.
Health Education Standard 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health
enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks.

OBJECTIVES
Psychomotor - The fourth grade students will be able to perform 10-12 beginner
yoga poses.
Cognitive The fourth grade students will be able to connect health benefits to
yoga. (ACADEMIC LANGUAGE USED)
Affective - The third grade students will be able to cooperate together as a whole
class and perform at least three different yoga poses the instructor instructs the class
to do.
The students will be spaced appropriately so no one is injured will doing yoga poses and
they will have their own personal space while being monitored by the instructor.

Some students may have trouble with flexibility and get frustrated easily. Instructor will be
walking around and encouraging individuals. Instructor may possibly have the class take a
break from activity if students are getting too frustrated.
Keep students on task.
Have clear instructions.
Keep the lesson flowing, smooth transitions to each yoga pose.
Expectations: If student is off task the instructor will hand a stop sign that says Please stop
what youre doing and make a better choice. The student must hand stop sign back when
ready and tell instructor how they will make a better choice.
Students may not stay in their own space and may go onto others mats and could possibly
harm another student.

Demonstration #1:

Activity 1: Learning beginner yoga poses:


1. Instructor will demonstrate all the different beginner yoga poses
- Upward facing dog
- Downward facing dog
- Childs pose
- Cat pose
- Cow pose
- Right triangle
- Half moon left/right
- Half cobra
- Low lunge

2. Students will be on their own mats doing the poses


(7-9 minutes)

TRANSITION: Have students look to front. Ask them if they are


comfortable with the poses and if they are ready to move on to
putting them all together.

Demonstration #2:

Activity 2: Putting the poses together:


1. Yoga session putting all the poses together
I will play calming music while I instruct the students on yoga poses
(7-9 minutes)

TRANSITION: Have students stand up and group them off by color.


Have each group skip to a different corner of the gym
(1 minute)
Demonstration #3:

If time allows we will proceed with the last activity.


Activity 3: Form your own yoga pose:
1. Students will develop their own yoga poses
Student will then show the class their favorite pose out of the poses
they made up
(7-9 minutes)

TRANSITION:
I will stop activity after 7-9 minutes and have students meet in
center of the gym for Closure discussion.

Students will gather in a circle and answer the essential questions about the lesson
today. Students must verbally as a class answer three questions.

Yoga - a Hindu spiritual and discipline, including breath control, simple


meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures, it is widely practiced for health
and relaxation.
