To deepen their understanding, students will learn about animals and plants throughout the world and the
different climates and areas they live in.
Learning Outcome: Students will be able to identify different habitats and what animals and plants reside
there, and will be able to create a model habitat and have a final assessment with 85% accuracy.
3. Assessment (type[s] of assessment used throughout the lesson)
Assessment(s) before, during, and after the lesson
Pre: Teacher-led discussion about areas of the world where animals may live and why students think animals
and plants live where they do.
During: Students will be given interactive activities and worksheets. Teacher will make note of any difficulties
and questions during this time.
Post: Students will make a model habitat from understanding the lesson and will be given a simple
assessment.

(The before, during, and after the lesson, e.g., Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Guided Practice,
Conclusion)
1. Greet the Students, introduce the lesson, speak of lessons purpose, and tell students what we
will be doing during class period.
2. Engagement: Teacher-led discussion of what students already understand about habitats,
animals, plants, and resources needed to survive.
3. Procedures:
a. Direct instruction through a visual PowerPoint. At the end of the power point is
an interactive game all students can participate in by matching animals to habitats.
b. Students will be able to ask questions after lesson to deepen their
understanding of something they may have missed.
c. Students will turn to a partner to go over what was taught in the lesson.
4. Guided practice: Students will be given group worksheets and will be able to seek help from
classmates. Students will then be given individual worksheets in which the teacher may help if
needed.
5. Conclusion: In order to leave for the day, students must write four things they learned about
the lesson from the day and turn them in.

field trip to a zoo where they will learn about real habitats. Students will be put into groups to make a model
habitat with animals and plants.

7. Resources and Materials

9. Differentiation/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor
To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences, cultural and language differences, etc.
Students who need physical accommodations will be given the tools to help them (moving closer to the
board, bigger print worksheets, etc.)
Students from different cultures and languages may need a paper clearly defining slang and bigger words on
the worksheets.
Exceptional learners who may need more time, space, or help may be given a private space to work or be
directed to a seperate classroom, depending on the students need.
Gifted learners who need more advanced work may be asked why animals need to reside where they do and
why wouldnt they be able to live in a different habitat. This will open the door to thinking and deeper
understanding.
10. Classroom Management
Strategies consistent with the learning needs of the lesson that also meet student behavior needs to help
keep students on task and actively engaged
Students will be aware of expectations and consequences at the beginning of the year and will follow
throughout the year.

Students will be able to communicate with classmates if needed if in a respectful manner.

During the discussions, inputs by students will be valued and respected.
Students will be free to ask questions.

Activities for early finishers that extend students understanding of and thinking about the learning
objectives (goals) by applying their new knowledge in a different way
Students will be given an interactive world map where they must place animals and plants where they
believe they should go in the world. This will deepen their understanding of where animals live in the world in
relation to us.
12. Follow-up to Todays Lesson
Quick activity for review or building on todays learning that will deepen student understanding and
interconnect concepts (may be incorporated tomorrow or throughout the unit)
Throughout the unit, I will ask students for new things they found about their habitats each day and students
